Vanderbilt Hotline: Bowling for Material

You know it's bad when Maurice Patton's Vanderbilt sports article in the Tennessean is about bowling. This is not to denigrate the Commie bowlers at all, but just to point out that we are definitely in a lull period. The lady "dudes" (a la Big Lebowski) enter the 8-team NCAA Bowling Championships as the #3 seed. Max Franklin has an article about the lady pinsters (clearly, I am reaching here) in today's Hustler. Good luck ladies. Brett Hait completes his two-part series in today's Nashville City Paper by analyzing CBJ's defensive unit. Understandably, Hait's piece focuses on the beast that is Jonathan Goff. #1 Vanderbilt hosts cross-town rival (yeah, I said it Big Guy) Belmont tonight at Hawkins Field. That game gets underway at 7 eastern, 6 in the heartland.

There is a lot going on at VSL. We are starting a membership drive for the National Commodore Club's NCC 2020 Society, we have been vindicated with our idea to play Northwestern in football, and we have brought back the Hoser of the Week. All in all, not a bad week.

Last night's American Idol was not awesome. Sanajaya and Phil weren't bad, Melinda and Lekisha weren't exceptional, and Haley was wearing clothes (although barely). Simon hit the nail on the head with her tactic to wear as "little clothing as possible." I am sticking with my original bottom three of Phil, Chris, and Haley, but think that unfortunately, Lekisha might be in danger. For the first time all season, I really think Jordan will be the next American Idol. Right now, I have Jordan, Melinda, and Blake as my final three.

Bowling is NOT a sport. Anything that you get better at as you consume pizza, nachos and miller lite cannot be a sport. Something you can do with a longneck in one hand and a non-filter in the other hand CANNOT be a sport. Bowling is not a sport - it's a recreation.

American Idol is not legit either.

It's a glorified Ramada Inn lounge karaoke night.

Support real musicians who pay/paid their dues instead.

Gee...I don't know...how about all those band that will be at Rites of Spring?

Looked at a copy of "Rave" recently? Plenty of local gigs of real musicians coming up.

Lightning 100 and 102.9 both do local listings on the air, but people who watch A.I. probably aren't cool enough to listen to THOSE stations...they probably listen to "the river" - just like the suburban housewife office workers.

Not being in Nashville, I really don't listen to any of those stations, but I certainly appreciate having a list to reference when I do make it down. Just out of curiosity, what's the classic rock station in Nashvegas?

I haven't heard of almost any of the Rites bands. Personally, I keep hoping they will get Huey Lewis and the News one of these years.

Anonymous, how would you feel about emailing me a list of quality bands/songs that the "hiply challenged" like myself could use to try and get "with it." I'll post the Anonymous Top 10 or whatever since clearly, we are struggling for material. That, or continue to mock. Either one works for me.

Good luck to the bowlers. I support every Vanderbilt team in everything. A lot of people have voiced how awful it would be if our first NC were in bowling. Well, I have no problem with that. If Vanderbilt's got a bowling team, I want to win the national championship. The problem isn't that the bowling team might win it all; the problem would be if other teams don't. I want bowling, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's golf, lacrosse (doesn't look like that'll happen), and of course baseball to ALL win national championships by the summer.

Huey Lewis? Isn't that what high school girls listened to in 1985?

He did those "Back to the Future" movie songs. Good movie. Corny top-40 songs though.

He acutally did pay his dues, having fronted a band called "Clover" before making it as a solo artist. Clover was sort of a California-Doobie Brothers style band and were actually pretty decent.

Most of his solo stuff was really corny. His one "clever" song about "wanting a new drug" was actually written by a Texas band called "Asleep at the Wheel" - thus even if he did a decent job covering the song, he can't get too much credit since he didn't write it.

He gets an overall poor grade of a "D" and if it wasn't for Clover would rate a grade of "F" as a rock artist.

Hey, quit using my screen name.

Anyway 105.9 is the longest running "classic rock" station in Nashville but has goofy morning redneck d.j.'s and plays to much cry-in-your-beer crap ("Turn the page", "Peaceful easy feeling", etc..not to mention crap like the Charlie Daniels band)...and worst of all they broadcast the most redneck thing on earth - ut football games.

97.1 (hits of the 60's & 70's) is sort of classic rock but not a great station either by any stretch...playing radio edits of otherwise good songs (Frankenstein, 25 or 6 to 4, etc...with parts of the songs cut out like a 1975 a.m. top 40 station would have done to get a song down to 3 or 4 minutes. This REALLY sucks)

"Jack FM" is a chain of stations nationwide that might play Kiss one minute and BeeGees the next followed by Nirvana followed by some disco song then some 80's "new wave" song followed by some semi-current hard rock or top-40 song. Hard to fall in a groove listening to Jack. Some people think it is a classic rock station because maybe they heard Ac/Dc or Zeppelin on there once. Sorry. It's a variety station, not a classic rock station.

It was MY screen name first.

Is THIS what a non-wimpy rock station looks like? -
