VandySports.com Reports Vanderbilt Plans to Formally Announce Next Football Coach Monday

Here's the story from Chris Lee, Jessee Johnson, and Mike Rapp of VandySports.com, that was linked to by Mr.SEC.com. ESPN.com's Joe Schad tweets that no formal offer has been made to Malzahn but that the university has indicated the job is his for the taking. As Mr.SEC points out, the officialness of an offer is often semantic at this point. Vanderbilt has clearly indicated that Malzahn is their top choice, but if he were to spurn an offer (official or unofficial) a 7 year, $3 million dollar a season deal, the Commodores would be able to move on to their next choice and say "he was our guy all along." As disingenuous as that might be, it's the way the game is played. And, even if Malzahn does pass, Vanderbilt would only have been rejected by 1 coach, as opposed to the countless number who thumbed their noses at another SEC school in Tennessee looking to hire a new coach earlier this year.

I believe the Navy coach rejected, in some sense, correct? Also, didn't the Air Force coach express his disinterest early on? Just clarifying.

Technical compensation question: Malzhan apparently is worth $3 mil. But is Franklin? Does Franklin get $3 mil if they do this bait and switch, as you've described?

I'd be shocked if the $3 million dollar figure was offered to anyone not named Malzahn, but I could be wrong.

That 3mil is rumored to include lots of incentives. The guarantee is more like 1.6 or 1.8. Still not chopped liver, no?

On the other hand, Bud Adams needs to pony up next himself...

"If Vanderbilt offers that much, Malzahn would be foolish not to consider it. In which case, other SEC schools would bump up their coaches' salaries, sliding Vanderbilt back toward the bottom."
