Vanderbilt Hotline: Professional Commies Edition

The papers of record concerning Vanderbilt Sports are talking about the pro prospects of some of your favorite Commies. Mo Patton writes in today's Tennessean about the Vanderbilt "trio [trying out] for the NFL." Linebacker Kevin Joyce and receiver Marlon White will try out for the Chicago Bears, with defensive tackle going out for the New York Giants. Personally, I would love to see Joyce playing for Gang Green, but that's because I am huge Vanderbilt and Jets homer. Vanderbilt lineback and defensive end Funtaine Hunter signed a free agent contract last week with the Cleveland Browns.

Brett Hait writes in today's Nashville City Paper about Derrick Byars' draft preparation. SEC Player of the Year Derrick Byars is all over the map in NBA mock drafts, projected as high as 15 on NBADraft.net, a second round pick by DraftExpress.com, and ranked as the 38th best player in the draft by ESPN. The only thing that could make the Knicks less dead to me would be them drafting DB. DB's draft journey is featured promenently on VUCommdores.com

Vanderbilt baseball players are still at it, and now have 3 players nominated as semi-finalists for the Golden Spikes Award. Third baseman Pedro Alvarez and pitchers David Price and Casey Weathers were all nominated according to a report in today's Tennessean.

Both the men and the women's tennis teams are headed to the NCAA Tournament, with the women earning their 13th consecutive invite, and the men barely making it in according to Harold Huggins in today's Nashville City Paper.

Now to Idol. Despite locking myself out of my apartment and having to spend more money than I have to get a locksmith to drill the lock, replace it, and let me in, I still managed to catch Bon Jovi night on Idol. Overall, I thought the show was great. Obviously, Chris has to go. He is terrible, annoying, and done. The second person (they are voting off two tonight) is less clear to me. I thought one of the worst two performances last night was Jordan. I have said before that I thought Jordan was going to win it all...and she still might. But in my upset of the year, I am predicting Jordan Sparks in the bottom 3 and in serious jeopardy. The fact that last night's votes will be combined with last week's votes should help her. Still, she wasn't very good and I wouldn't be surprised if she makes an early exit. While not nearly as talented, Phil Stacey appears to be this season's Elliot Yamin. No one expected him to make it this far, and yet he keeps hanging around. I thought Melinda was fantastic and Blake was pretty bold to do what he did to reinvent a Bon Jovi classic, "You Give Love a Bad Name."

Since this is my space to talk about whatever I want, I am going to take this opportunity to complain about what crappy luck the Yankees are having this season. I know many, if not most of you, don't care at all. I am, frankly, OK with that. Last night Phillip Hughes was pitching a no-hitter in his second major league start through 6.1 IP. Then, he injured his hamstring, putting him on the DL for 4-6 weeks. Are you kidding me? The Yankees call up their future ace, he is throwing a no-no through 6 innings and he gets injured and is out for 4-6 weeks? At some point, the string of back luck suffered by the Yankees starting pitching staff becomes comical. I suspect to all you Yankee haters out there, it already has.

Lost, Idol results, and the return of Bobby's lady friend. As long as I don't lock myself out again, things are looking up tonight.

If Chris isn't one of the two voted off I'm boycotting Idol. He's not bad enough to be a Sanjaya-type novelty, and he's certainly not good enough to win this thing.

Also -- mix in a razor on that beard, Chris. It's starting to look like a sod farm for Paula Cole's armpits.

Blake has balls.

Idol Gives Back should have included a razor drive for Seacrest and Chris.

On the Yanks vs. the Rangers, you failed to mention a Vandy alum, Matt Kata, playing for those struggling Rangers and having lots of success in spot duty.

I'm going to the game on Thursday... I predict a split in this series since both teams are managing to find ways to be as bad as possible. Perhaps the Rangers will manage to lose more games, they have more experience with that, after all.

I am starting to feel bad for the Yankees, i mean you had a pitcher pitching a no hitter, now he's out for 4-6 weeks. Oh well, karma is a bitch
