VSL Hotline: Random Musings, Edition

We're getting to the time of year where there won't be much to talk about. While we are still waiting for a big football announcement (expected Friday), there are a few stories worth noting. First, ESPN.com's Eammon Brennan has a story from the Nike Skills Camp about Jeffery Taylor. According to the story, Jeffery was very impressive during work-outs and drew a lot of attention from NBA scouts. The question with Taylor remains shooting, but there is no doubt he's got a game that could translate at the next level.

Staying with basketball, the Nashville City Paper has a story on the Commodores more recent commitment, Kevin Bright. There's not a lot of meat on the bone of the story, but it's something.

Finally, a random musing from me. In watching the conclusion of the College World Series between Florida and South Carolina, something struck me: the Gators looked at the Gamecocks the way the Commodores appeared to look at the Gators: unsure. This is not a knock against the Vanderbilt baseball team, which had an absolutely incredible year. Still, sometimes there are teams that other teams just have a hex on, and I think given the way their 6 games played out over the 2011 season, one could make the case that that was the case with Vandebilt and Florida. I think a similar case could be made about the Gators and the Gamecocks. Florida was 1-4 against the Gamecocks and 52-15 against the rest of America. The Gators, a fantastic defensive team throughout the season, committing just 70 errors in 72 games. Yet, 8 of those errors came in 5 games against the Gamecocks. Maybe I'm grasping at straws and just trying to make myself feel better (it wouldn't be the first time), but last night's result just affirms how dominant the SEC East was this year in baseball. It also makes me wonder, if the seeding had been different, would the Commodores have been the ones hoisting that trophy in Omaha?

I have also thought about "what if the seeding had been different". What if Vandy had SC's seed and we made it to the finals to play SC, after they beat Florida. It makes for something interesting to think about. Of course, it really does not matter because it did not happen but still draws some interest.

How can you not feel good about what Franklin has done so far? It is way to early to make any kind of judgement but for any true Vanderbilt football fan, we look for any chance of improvement we can possibly have. I am really hopefull for the future.

As for basketball, I really don't know if we will ever have a better chance in my lifetime than we will have this year. How can you not be excited about this year. Kentucky will be strong, but so will be our DORES!!!!

It is a good time right now to be a Commodore Fan!!
