If he leaves can we hire Bruce Pearl as an assistant just to yell at the team before games?
The impact of this possibility should not go unstated. King Rice is far and away our best recruiter. He is the reason we've been able to sign some really top notch recruiting classes. Without him, I worry about the prospects of us getting guys like Poythress for next year.
On top of that, Matt Painter might leave Purdue for Missouri. If this happens, given the departure of King Rice, wouldn't CKS be a top candidate for the Purdue job? He played there from 1979-1982 and he was the assistant there for years as well. I wouldn't be surprised to see Stallings take the job at his alma mater. In the basketball world, leaving Vandy for Purdue makes sense, especially if it's his alma mater.
I'm not sure how King rice leaving has any impact on whether CKS stays at Vandy. I still don't think Painter goes to Mizzou (he is also a Purdue alum and Gene Keadey has said he thinks Painter will return but if looking for more commitment from the University).
King Rice helped us land some big guys for this program, including Brad Tinsley after his decommitment from Pepperdine, Stevie Thunder, Rod Odom, and most recently Dai-Jon Parker.
Stallings needs to bring in someone who is able to help reign in this 2012 class, which in my opinion is pivotal in taking the program to new heights. Never before (with the exception of JJ) have we be in such a position to land dynamic talents like Tony Parker and Alex Poythress. We need someone who can help close the book. CKS and Dan Muller do a great job already on the recruiting front, but the newest coach has to have the ability to recruit much like his predecessor did.
As to CKS heading to Purdue, I do think it's a legitimate concern if Painter leaves for Missouri. The jury is still out as to whether that will happen, however, so it's a little early to discuss the next domino falling.
King Rice also struck me as the "players' coach," or the sugar coating to Kevin's acidity. He alwyas seemed to be the most positive one on game days reinforcing confidence and keeping chins up.
