The Daily Beast did a survey of BCS Conference schools using the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate (APR) score, a metric of academic eligibility and retention for student athletes that's designed to predict ultimate graduation rates, to determine the "smartest" and "dumbest" programs in the nation. Not surprisingly, Vanderbilt is tops in the SEC, ranking as the 6th smartest in America. Not alone on the smartest list, fellow SECers Alabama (12), Georgia (16), Florida (17), and Ole Miss (18) also made the top 25 "smartest" field. LSU is #2 on the "dumbest" list, with Auburn coming in at 10th, Kentucky 11th, Arkansas 18th, and South Carolina 21st.

Not saying Kentucky doesn't deserve to be where they are, but UK's APR from last season and this one took a huge hit when Daniel Orton decided not to finish his 2nd semester and go to the draft. Probably wouldn't have been so bad but for that.

To the extent you think the APR is a credible/revealing indicator, you might be concerned to learn that James Franklin was serving as OC at the 13th "dumbest" school in the country. It's worth noting, however, that APR has been widely criticized as a metric of academic progress and standards for student-athletes.
