Is Today The Day?

With Vanderbilt's Basketball team on hiatus until next Saturday for finals, Commodore fans have their attention firmly fixed on who their next head football coach will be. Jeff Lockridge writes in today's Tennessean what the vast majority of Commodore fans would have told you 5 minutes after Robbie Caldwell resigned: Gus Malzahn in Vanderbilt's top choice. VandySports.com's Mike Rapp writes that today is "Decision Day for Malzahn" on the site that appears to be ahead of the pack reporting wise on the Commodores coaching search. And, of course there is a obligatory "Don't do it, Gus" column from Jon Solomon of the Birmingham News warning Malzahn to take his time and pick the right job (read, any job by Vanderbilt). Whatever Malzahn's decision and the decisions made thereafter, there can be little doubt that Vanderbilt, through this coaching search, has shown it is serious about football. What happens from here is anyone's guess.

Whatever happens this weekend regarding the final candidate(s), we should be very proud of the way the search was handled. It was clear that David Williams and the administration want to be serious players in SEC football going forward. It will be a complete break from the BJ era. The fact that this has been handled behind the scenes and relatively quiet until the last few days is really amazing in this day and age of coaching rumors. Even the most hardened vandy football fan should be excited about the options for next year's team especially if Malzahn accepts the position. It also puts the entire SEC on notice that vandy will no longer roll over and be a punchiing bag for the conference. It should be a great impact to recruiting for the class of 2012. Its a win / win either coach; but a home-run if we get Malzahn. Go Dores !

Oh baby! I cant believe Vandy football is in the position its right now. I always thought we'd have an outside shot at Malzahn, but this is closer than I ever thought it would be. I just dont see the huge disadvantages everyone outside of Vandy sees. Northwestern and Standford are similar to Vandy and are winning in the conferences. Malzahn has to see he could be that guy for us. If he took us to two bowl games in 3 years (I believe we have the talent to make it happen over the next 3 years) he would be imortalized here at Vandy. What coach doesnt want to leave a program being a legend... well Malzahn could be it for us. Also, theres that coaching in the SEC, living in Nashville, and getting around $3 million a year too... but those are the little things in life.

Also, Bobby is looking to get an extension from Arkansas which is good for us. That job isnt going to come open for Malzahn and I highly doubt Mullen will go to UF. If we get him, our football culture has to change too. Vandy fans cant buy tickets and sell them to opposing fans just cause we loose a few games. Nothing makes me more sick than that...

Seth well said my friend. You reflect what every true Vanderbilt fan believes in his heart. It is time for the culture to change and I think with a hire like Malzahn and a commitment to excellence both on and off the field from the administration, I think you'll see a renewed enthusiasm from Vandy fans of all ages. I spoke with my dad yesterday who is getting fairly old but is also a VU alum and even he said that he was going to renew his season tickets again given what he's seen transpired. Hats off to David Williams.

Yea, you have to tip your hat to Williams. He has blown so many smoke screens for this Malzahn thing to come out of nowhere. Who knew he was in town Wednesday night on Wednesday night/ Thursday morning... yea. Remember in 08 for the Auburn, SC games? How the stadium was full of just Vandy fans... with of course the designated section for SC and Auburn fans? There is a hungry market for college football here in Nashville. With the Titans looking to be down (which I hate) this could be a time for Vandy football to take off. Lets hope Malzahn takes our offer...
