"Vanderbilt North" Phenomenon Starting to Make Sense -- Is Myron Lewis Next?

Apparently Rex Hogan, the Chicago Bears' scout for the East region (including the SEC), lives in Nashville and is married to a woman who works as an academic counselor for Vanderbilt athletics. Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times has the story here. All of a sudden, Vanderbilt placing 5 of its 16 NFL players (and possibly 6 of 17 if WR George Smith makes the roster) in Chicago makes a lot more sense.

On a separate but somewhat related note, has anyone else realized how much love Myron Lewis is getting for the 2010 NFL Draft? He's variously rated as the #5 cornerback (see also here), the #8 safety, and the #2 cornerback (i.e., a late-first rounder) of 2010. Very interesting. I definitely think the projection of moving him to safety makes sense given his stature at 6'3", but he's always struck me as more of a cover guy and not a wood-layer. We shall see...

Need to keep in mind that safety's are being asked to essentially be free ranging cornerbacks more than be hard hitting Lb's this days. That is why Reshard Langford didn't get drafted. Athletic/big CB's are being moved to Safety and hard hitting Safeties are moved to LB. The days of Roy Williams type safeties is gone.

Point well taken, I'm just saying it seems like all Myron's great plays have come in one-on-one cover situations where he's breaking on a receiver's move rather than reading the quarterback and playing outfielder (like the Music City Bowl INT). Myron has played the boundary corner spot opposite DJ at field corner, so his position has not lent itself well to demonstrating skills you would look for from an NFL safety, which I agree include ranging for picks ... but I also can't buy the argument that there's no longer a premium on open-field tackling for NFL safeties. Not saying Myron can't be rangy, I just don't think we've seen him do much of it -- which of course could change this year if CBJ decides to move him over to field corner.

I would agree that the days of the hard-hitting safety are no longer. If anything, the best safeties in the NFL are both. They're counted on to be hybrids and do both positions well. That's why you see more of the larger cornerbacks in the draft being considered for a move to safety. The idea is that they have the size to lay the wood but also have speed to cover. Perhaps the days of safeties who are just another linebacker in the box are over, but safeties aren't just another corner either.

Pardon me, would NOT agree that the days of the hard-hitting safety are over.
