Calipari to the SEC?

Kentucky receives permission to talk with the Memphis coach according to the AP. ESPN's Andy Katz, citing a report in the Memphis Commercial-Appeal, is reporting that Memphis players, after meeting with Calipari this morning, were "convinced their coach would leave their program for Kentucky's."

Certainly seems like Calipari wants it. Of course, nothing is a done deal until the papers or signed (or a memorandum of understanding is signed, in Billy Clyde's case).

This is a homerun hire for Kentucky. You gotta admit that. Frankly, it scares me.

It scares me too, and they have some solid recruits coming in over the next couple of years.

Travis Ford is not nearly as good a coach as Calipari.

If Jodie Meeks stays this could be a real good team in a couple of years.

I still don't think even Calipari could re-recruit both Patterson and Meeks back (they're gone to the draft, boyos). So, for next year, we'll be fine. In two-three years, however, we're fucked.

Lock it up boys, your quivering over the thought of Calipari joining the SEC... seriously? What has he actually done beyond dominate a meaningless league that has zero competition? They made one run thanks to a one and doner which incidentally is all Calipari really recruits, and run a gimmick offense based on having a super athletic team which dominates a crap league with inferior athletes but doesn't get it done in a power conference and doesn't translate to National Championships. He's all hype and you guys are buying in. let him go to Kentucky the only reason hell last longer then billy is b/c he'll have so many clauses built into that contract he might actually be the Chancelor or whatever lower class version of that position Kentucky has. I say bring on Johhny boy, and can't wait for him to get exposed and inevitably entangled in a Sampsonesque recruiting violation fest. It's a home run if Kentucky was looking to get as far away as possible from the tradition and class that their program used to embody.

he has proven he can beat the best teams in the country in the tournament......

Rumor= 8 years $35 million!!!!???!?!??

The most important question is: Can Stallings pull a Bobby Johnson and get a transfer from a current KY player who will be on the outside looking in under Calipari?

Georgia has also offered Mike Anderson their head coaching job. While this would be a less posh hire than Calipari, it would be a great hire for Georgia. Anderson's teams are known for running the court and bringing lots and lots of pressure, which gives Vanderbilt teams fits.

I should point out that none of these hires indicate that our program is going to go backwards, but it's certainly going to make the league a lot more competitive. So when we smoke these guys during the year it's only going to make us look better. Go Commies!

I mean he has def dominated a weaker league but 4 straight sweet sixteen's is nothing to scoff at. But we also have to remember that a good Kentucky is good for the entire SEC. It means we get more exposure and although it will be tougher to win UK will never dominate the league like they once did so this is prob a good thing. Look at how good the coaching talent in the SEC East is. Pearl, Stallings, Donavan and now Calipari.

Also a note, Nick Calathes has declared for the NBA Draft. He hasn't signed an agent, so he can come back to school if he wants, but he's put his name in the hat, which would be VERY nice for us.

It's easier to get to the sweet sixteen when your constantly get a protected seed due to domination of a week conference. You guys are all also ignoring that Calipari is a sleeze ball coach who let's his team get away with anything, including beating their girlfriends and multiple night club incidents without repercussion. You think that;s something he's gunna be able to get away with at a more high profile job and something that Kentucky fans and alumni are gunna sweep under the rug the way Memphis did?

We have to remember that the SEC is not that strong of a conference. Sure, it is stronger than CUSA but it is no where near the ACC, Big East, and Big 10.

And as much as scumbag activity upsets all of us, the fact is that scumbaggery gets swept under the rug in a lot of places where the W's are churning. So until Calipari gets caught for doing something ridiculous, which is no guarantee in itself, we have to worry about the fact that he's probably going to get some sick recruits and win some ball games, making it THAT much tougher for us to accomplish what should be our goal, to win the SEC East.

The only good news about Cal and possibly Mike Anderson joining the East is that at the least we have a head start on both of them. CKS is an excellent coach and can really develop players, but this puts the spotlight on us to respond positively and play well even more. Fortunately, we've got good players in the program already, and we aren't having any immediate signs of rockiness.

Aaron just lost all credibility by invoking the Meek 11 as a beacon of strength in collegiate athletics.

Personally, I see Mike Anderson coming (and revitalizing Georgia) is a bigger long term problem for the Commodores than Cal headed to Lexington.

Yeah seriously. With the exception of this year the SEC has been a far better conference then the Big Ten in B-ball.

And I still think a strong UK is good for Vandy and the SEC in general.

Looks like the guy is a Vandy fan

Sorry for talking about this year and how bad the SEC was even compared to the Big 10. 7 teams for the Big 10 in the tourney, 2 from the MIGHTY SEC.

Calapari would be joining a weak SEC conference.

Bobby O'Shea said...

Well, it was actually 3 SEC teams (not 2, get your facts straight). And despite the SEC's relative "downness" this year, it is unacceptable to long to be more like the Meek 11
