VSL Hotline: Short but Sweet, Edition

There's not much out there to highlight, but that doesn't mean we rest on our laurels (or anything else) at VSL Central.

The Man We Love to Hait opines the possibility of a "Shootout" this Saturday when Rice comes to today in this morning's Nashville City Paper.

The New York Times' Katie Thomas has an article on the contract dispute between Pedro Alvarez and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The AP's got a story on this controversy where Commissioner Bud Selig has offered testimony in the grievance hearing.

Love the Big East/SEC Challenge and the Cancun Challenge looks like a quality tournament. Drake and VCU are great competition to see before conference play. With Illinois at home, Georgia Tech and UMass on the road, and the tournament matchups, this will be the best pre-conference lineup we've seen in recent memory.

I actually think all things considered it's a pretty weak non-conference schedule. Illinois has dropped off and was actually bad last year, Georgia Tech is a downgrade as far as acc opponents go, and USF is the bottom of the big east... I think Kstall is actually coddling the freshmen this year with the schedule before conference play, something he won't have the option of doing when we tip off the Maui classic next year.

I agree I was alittle dissapointed with the sched. Illinois hasn't recruited well recently. Georgia Tech is always solid if unspectacular. Umass is only significant because it is a solid road game. The best the Big East could offer us in South Florida? Really? I am a big fan of a challenging non-conf sched because it prepares you for the SEC and it will be looked at when tournament time comes. I'd rather test these freshman early and see who has it then get them some false confidence only to get their asses kicked in what I think will be a much improved SEC East.
