Sunday Funday Morning Mix

Good news and bad news.

Brett Hait tells us the defense was flying around during Saturday's scrimmage, but CBJ was extremely disappointed with the offensive intensity. He said that the lackadaisical attitude of many offensive personnel was especially disheartening in light of the fact that many if not most of these guys are battling for starting spots. Chris Nickson was the starter at QB, with Jared Hawkins lining up at tailback and Udom Umoh stepping in for the injured George Smith at wideout. One of the notable bright spots on D was end Broderick Stewart, who ripped off a sack and blew up a screen pass for a 17-yard loss.

Hait provides us with a few offensive stats from the scrimmage:

Passing: Chris Nickson 5-10-51, 1 TD; Mackenzi Adams 4-10-2, 1 TD; Jared Funk, 3-4-9, 1 TD; Larry Smith 5-12-63, 1 TD

Rushing: Jared Hawkins 3-21, Jeff Jennings 5-29, Gaston Miller 9-34, Kennard Reeves 8-68, 1 TD, Ryan van Rensburg 6-17, Chris Nickson 5-14, Mackenzi Adams 1-8, Jared Funk 1-11, Larry Smith 2-7.

Receiving: Justin Wheeler 2-27, 1 TD, Sean Walker 1-6, 1 TD, Austin Monahan 2-28, 1 TD, Jamie Graham 2-13, 1 TD, Udom Umoh 2-5, Jared Hawkins 3-(-6), Terrence Jeffers 1-29, Jeff Jennings 1-7, Brandon Barden 1-5, Turner Wimberly 1-4, John Cole 1-(-2).

The other bad news: Jonathan Goff, who was picked up in the fifth round by the NY Giants, is out indefinitely after breaking a vertebra in his lower back during the G-men's preseason game against Detroit Thursday night.

Better news: Brandt Snedeker is tied for eighth and set to play 36 holes of golf today at the PGA Championship after yesterday's rain led to suspension of play for the final groups at Oakland Hills. Follow him at this link.

Most importantly, cheer on USA basketball as they play the most-watched basketball game in history against China...starting NOW.

It's invariably true that early in camp the defense dominates...that's their job, to react and fly to the ball.

Vandy's defense had success pressuring the QB last year, albeit with creative blitz packages. It would be nice if Stewart becomes a serious pass rushing threat and can draw double teams on passing downs...even if other teams have to leave a back out of the passing offense to help the OT with "chip" blocking it allows the defensive staff to become even more creative.

The key for the offense now is reps: Particularly for this O-line to work on combination run blocking and pass protection as a unit, i.e., to have them see different fronts and make the pre-snap adjustment.

That sucks about Goff, hope he's OK long term.

I've also heard talk about Sneds as a possible Ryder Cup captain's pick...he's 44th on the money list right now and he's had a solid season.

This is a comment for Seamus O'Toole from J & J:

1. From J#1: Seamus you are really really hot.

2. From J#2: you're a dumb son of a bitch.

Keep up the good vandy work fellas.
