Happy 4th

Tomorrow we celebrate our independence, which means chances are you're not doing much at work today, if you're there at all (half day for myself, a ridiculous concept given that it's impossible to accomplish anything in 3.5 to 4 hours in an office, but alas). Which means you should be chatting it up about Shan Foster getting picked up by the Mavs, or Brandt Snedeker's chances at Congressional, or maybe something else really cool that I don't even know about.

The Mavs called Foster "too good to pass up," Jim Rome loves him, his humility, and his amazing "I can't wait to play in the NBA" song, and Mavericks fans appear to be stoked about their draft choice. For good reason, too. Shan can straight-up shoot the rock, and I think he fits in well as the Mavs' only draft pick given the makeup of their team, which (as Douglas James has accurately pointed out) is more Dirk-and-dribble-penetration-oriented at the moment, with an aging roster that could open up some real opportunities for Shan. The Mavs' #1 fan in all the world (maybe 2nd to Mark Cuban) had this to say about the last available "A-lister" on Dallas's short list: "I am PUMPED about this pick." Enough said.

Happy Independence Day. Go nuts.

I agree and think Shan has a real chance to make this roster. His shooting ability is incredible. I personally think that Jay Bilas is a moron for saying that he doesn't think Shan can adjust to an "NBA range" three. He'll do just fine.

I'm predicting Shan hits at least 1 game winning three for Dallas this season. Also check out this article on Cbs sportsline about break out years in the NFL some of you might remember the man at #19 who should have stuck around for his 4th year at Vandy but is finally coming into his own. Who knew he had grown into a DT?

Jovan Haye has been a great NFL player for the past couple of years. He's certainly played well in every game I've watched in the NFC South. That's a great credit to Vandy's name.

To continue along the football vein, I think a player to watch out for this year will be Redshirt Freshman Udom Umoh. I've mentioned this guy to Bobby a few times, but I think he could really step into a thin position for us. He was an all-state selection in Georgia his senior year, not to mention a standout in track and field in the 200 and 400. Phil Steele thinks he'll see some minutes and I'm inclined to agree.

Whose going to be throwing him the ball you think?

Nickson. Nickson.

If it's Nickson, Umoh better be able to catch balls that bounce 10 yards in front of him, or 5 feet over his head (even Earl struggled with that last year). Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if by year's end, neither Adams or Nickson is behind center. Let's be honest guys, this upcoming season is going to be hard to watch. Greg Zollman and Woody Widenhoffer hard. We'll be watching more to root for young kids to get playing time/scouting for next year's chances, rather than actually expecting to win (with the SEC games and Wake game, I mean). As a tangent, I once took a class with Jovan Haye... and I'm pretty sure academics was part of the reason he left early. The professor used to wake him twice a class. I can still hear Prof. Krause's intensely nasal "Good morning, Jovan" whenever I see Haye on my tv.

Clarification: I'm not claiming Haye wasn't intelligent enough, just not motivated. College classes didn't seem to interest him. In that, I wasn't shocked when he told me he was entering the draft that year.
