Pedro Named Pre-Season Player of the Year; Commies ranked 11

VSL's been on somewhat of a hiatus these past few weeks. Still, this nugget of news was too good to pass up. Vanderbilt Third Basemen, junior Pedro Alvarez, was named Collegiate Baseball's preseason Player of the Year. Pedro is joined as a first-team All-American by senior Dominic de la Osa, with junior shortstop Ryan Flahety earning a second-team nod. The Commies are ranked 11th and will open the year against the two-time defending National Champion Beavers of Oregon State.

The basketball team finishes up their out of conference schedule with four games at Memorial against Tennessee-Martin tomorrow, Iona on New Year's Eve, and Rice on January 3rd. The team's out-of-conference finale comes against the Minutemen of UMass on January 5th, a game that can be seen on CSS or ESPN Full Court. VSL will try and have some more content up in the days to come, including a preview of the UMass game and a preview of the upcoming SEC schedule. The Commies are currently ranked 15 in both the Coaches and the AP polls, and have a legitimate shot to crack the top 10, especially if they travel to Thompson-Bolling 17-0, a game that is now slated to be seen nationally on ESPN (but let's not get ahead of ourselves).

In case we aren't back before, VSL would like to wish all of Commie Nation a safe and happy New Year.
