The World Has Turned Upside Down

While we anxiously await the Vanderbilt vs. Auburn game on Saturday, I thought it might be good fodder for discussion to discuss how crazy this season has been in college football. Certain events that have occured this year just lead everyone to question what they think they know. Let me start the list:

1. Vanderbilt actually has a good chance against Auburn for the first time since I can ever recall. Sure they beat Florida in the swamp, I'm not discrediting them as a good team, but the disparity between the teams as they stand now is not nearly as remote as it was 3 or 4 years ago.

2. Tonight, I'll be attending the South Carolina-Kentucky game here in Columbia (don't worry, I haven't turncoated, but it is pretty exciting). Normally this would result in a "who cares" among SEC fans, but there are a few incontrovertible facts which make this game a must-see.
  • Kentucky is #8 in the nation, their highest ranking since 1977 (they were #7).
  • South Carolina is ranked #11, their best ranking since 2001 under Lou Holtz at #9.
  • Both of these teams are playing to take the lead in the SEC East. 4 teams out of the East (Florida, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Georgia) are ranked in the top 15.
  • When was the last time Kentucky and South Carolina played a game of this importance? The answer is never.

3. The best football team in the state of Florida is not Miami, FSU, or Florida (debatable, Florida is very good).

4. Notre Dame is 0-5 for the first time EVER.

5. Michigan, ranked in the top 5, lost to a I-AA school at home, this has already been beaten in all of our heads, but still pretty unbelievable.

6. The all-time leader in receptions in the SEC will be from Vanderbilt at the end of the season.

7. 5 teams in the top 10 lost last week, (7 I think in the top 15). I don't remember the last time that ever happened. Even more amazing, the majority of the teams they lost to were unranked.

Am I missing some others? That seems like a pretty good list to start. Chime in with other stuff.

Houston Nutt hasn't been fired, and I think that's actually pretty odd.

Well, the last time we had a chance to beat Auburn was under Woody's last year, 2001, on Parent's Weekend. We were actually leading until, in the fourth quarter (at the last minute) a fake punt (that was unnecessarily) sealed out fate.

And that led a very memorable angry walk back to Reinke for me.

I think you're thinking of the 2000 game against Georgia. Unless Woody had two fake punts . . .
