Williams: Vandy "Capable of Winning SEC Title"

Chris Williams has thrown down the gauntlet, ladies and gentlemen. In a recent interview with Will Matthews of VUCommodores.com, Williams made the following comment:

"Legitimately, we are capable of winning the SEC title. As a team, we are closer than any team that I have ever been associated with here. We got a big group of work hard guys here. We have the talent to do it, so now it is just a matter of doing it."

Williams is a co-captain, a preseason All-American, and a future NFL tackle. He weighs 320 pounds, and when he's not solving equations in pursuit of his engineering degree, he protects Chris Nickson's blind side. This guy thinks Vanderbilt can win the SEC. I'm revising my preseason prediction and calling 9-3 plus a Cotton Bowl victory. And boom goes the dynamite.

It's quotes like that that make me so excited for this season and this team. They beleive and so does the Commie nation.

you guys are delusional...9 and 3? Cotton bowl victory? You are setting everyone up for disappointment. While i'm all for raising expectations lets be realistic and expect 6-6 and hope for 7-5.

Perhaps you're missing the point, Mr. James. That the fans and Commodore fanatics who run and post on a Vandy sports blog site have perhaps absurd hopes for the season is not the issue. The issue here is that the players finally feel like they have the talent to compete in the SEC. Williams is no moron... and if he thinks he and the rest of the O-line can protect against the best D-lineman in the country, then I'm inclined to believe him. Can you remember any Vanderbilt football player actually believing something like this in the past... ever? By virtue of that, he's setting the bar high for the rest of the team... and trust me, in team sports, confidence is everything. So yes, I might look at the schedule and think 7-5, 8-4 if we take it to Alabama... but if Williams' confidence permeates throughout the rest of the team, you can't tell me a season along the lines of Arkansas' meteoric rise from '05-'06 isn't, at the very least, a possibility.

Zero way we go 9-3. 8-4 is perfectly reasonable and 7-5 should be expected.

In the interest of accuracy, Williams is not working on an engineering degree; he is in Peabody's Human and Organizational Development program.
Also, I am not surprised with his optimism. It reminds me of a late night conversation I had with backup QB Richard Kovalchek who stated that the team had all the talent in the world. He went as far as to say that if they didn't win this season, they should shake up the coaching staff. With that said, if Vandy does not get to at least 5 wins, Bobby Johnson has to be on the hot seat, right?

Tennessee and Bitch Pearl got Tyler Smith from Iowa. I hate the Vols with all my heart, but they are going to have a talented basketball team this year. Thoughts??

Chad: Thank you for being the only responder not taking yourself too seriously on the preseason predictions.
