Initial Thoughts...

While the loss is still fresh, I have a few thoughts. One, it's unfortunate that this is how David Price's Vanderbilt career will probably end. There is something quite awful about David getting his first loss of the season with a 1.1 inning outting on 2 days rest. Two, Vanderbilt tempted fate a lot this season, and just weren't able to get over the hump this time. While you have to give Michigan credit, Vanderbilt ran itself out of a big inning in the 4th. Pedro homers, Flaherty and Meingasner singled. Flaherty advanced to 3rd on a FC and got picked off. Vanderbilt's inability to get another run home with 2 on and no one out clearly cost them.

With all that said, this team showed a lot of heart all season ong. They were down to their last strike and refused to go down without a fight. This has clearly been a tournament where the Goliaths have been slayed early. Vanderiblt is either the 5th or 6th #1 seed to not advance to the Super Regional. Still, this one stings for Commodore fans. With the college baseball world's attention on us, Vanderbilt was hoping to explode the stereotypes of Vanderbilt athletics. Unfortunately, most people will only see the box score and say, "that's Vanderbilt being Vanderbilt." Clearly, for people who have been following the team all season, that isn't the story...not even a little. This was a great team that lost a heartbreak. Tim Corbin is a sensational coach and this is still a very, very good team, even with the likely defections to the Majors.

If this seems muddled, I apologize. Having never following college basbeall until this season, I got attached to this team and was excited about watching them a play through Omaha. Clearly, that won't happen. It was a great season and one that should be celebrated by Commodore fans in the days and weeks to come. For now though, all I can say is congratulations to Coach Tim Corbin and the Commodore baseball team for a great season.

A final note on the Voice of the Commodores, Joe Fisher. He is currently thanking people involved with Commodore baseball and athletics more generally. This guy is a class act. He is humble and genuine and clearly loves the school and these teams. He is a great broadcaster and Commodore fans are lucky to have him.

That's why the CWS is one of the hardest things to win. Sorry guys, I feel for you all today.

There's just so many things about the game that "didn't happen the way they were supposed to" and so many places where you can say "if only."

The reality, at the end of the day, is that that's baseball.

And I'm depressed.

While the loss last night was absolutely crushing, I think we, as Vanderball fans and alums, have alot to be proud of from this season when we reflect:
-Ranked Number 1 for the majority of the season
-Thre candidates for POY: Alvarez, Price, and Weathers
-Candidate for Catcher of the Year: Robin
-SEC Regular Season Champs
-SEC Tournament Champs
-Probably No. 1 draft pick setting the all-time Vandy record for K's and missing the National all-time record by 8.
-De la Osa entered the 20/20 club (Homeruns/SB's) one of THREE players ever to do so.
-Flaherty had a 35 game hit streak, one shy of the all-time SEC mark and set the Vandy all-time mark
-Alvarez hit is 40th career HR and had 105 hits; 2nd most all-tim

I'll have more comprehensive stats later this week from the 2007 season.
