Vanderbilt Hotline: If we have a lot of action today...that's called a winning streak

Unfortunately, unless we want to continue the discussion from yesterday about how I am predicting an 8-4 record for the football team and Keegan Bell will be red-shirted, there's not much else to discuss. These stories were delivered to my in-box later in the day yesterday, and let's just say I am glad I didn't post them immediately.

We've got three stories to delve into. One, Vanderbilt is looking to spread its wings beyond NCAA sports and now has its sites set on auto racing. As reported in the Sporting News, once Brad Jaegar receives his mechanical engineering degree on Friday, he will now be able to focus full-time on his Indy Car racing career. So there is yet another Vanderbilt grad who had a sweet job after graduation...keep piling on guys, I'll get mine one of these days!

Great interview in yesterday's Tennessean with the Voice of the Commodores, Joe Fisher. I am a big Joe Fisher fan, not only because I am huge homer, but because as anyone who has ever watched a game with me, I am very aware of who is in the booth. I think Fisher is a great play-by-play guy, is exceptionally well prepared, and makes all the games very entertaining. It's also nice to see a Middle grad come over to Commie Nation.

The Daily News Journal in Murfreesboro is reporting that Oakland High School's Drew Fann has verbally committed to Vanderbilt. Fann, a very versatile player, has suited up as a catcher, first baseman, and outfielder for the 38-1 Patriots. On top of his .381 average, Fann is also that school's valedictorian. What are the chances everyone at school hates this guy for being so good at life? I feel you Drew, Bobby knows a little something about that...

Unfortunately, Blake survived and Lakisha did not on last night's Idol results show. While I can't say I am surprised, that doesn't mean I'm not disappointed. Last night's Lost was fantastic. For more on Lost, check out the official Lost blog of VSL, The DC Dharma Station.

I'm seriously considering going to Omaha for the CWS. Any takers?

It'll happen.

Stan keep me posted. I may be driving through there any way. I think I'll be living out of my car for a month starting the 24th.

FYI, CWS stars June 15 and can go as long as the 24th.

making the CWS is the hardest thing to do in college sports.

Harder than going undefeated in the SEC in football?

Answer: NO

harder.

at least in the SEC you know who you are facing, you play them every year. in the CWS, you might be playing a team you never heard of

Why does "who you play" or the inevitable randomness that comes from not knowing who you are playing make it more difficult than anything else? The same could be said of the NCAA basketball tournament's second round, elite eight, and championship games when you have less than 2 days to fully prepare for your next opponent. Worse, it's one and done, the CWS is a double elimination situation.

True winning the dance is harder then going undefeated in SEC football.
it makes it harder because year in and year out you play the same teams, you get a feel for that team, the players the coach, you know what to expect. when you go into a game never playing your foe...you don't have that.

I see your point, and would definitely agree that knowing your opponent is a factor. But in some respects, that makes my point about going undefeated in the SEC that much MORE difficult.

If you play the same teams year in, year out, you aren't going to be able to surprise anyone. Just as unfamiliarity can be a problem for teams in the CWS, so too can knowing a team and a coach as well as SEC teams know each other.

Trust me, I don't think going undefeated in the SEC is easy. It actually ranks third on the Masonfan's toughest things to do in college sports. Auburn got hosed by the BCS a few years ago. Hell, doing what they did they should of just been handed the Crystal Football and set on their way. That actually might be the biggest hose job in the history of hose jobs.

1) NCAA basketball champion
2) CWS
3) undefeated in SEC football
4) sleeping with a Vandy girl

Going undefeated in ACC Basketball??

Good 5 spot, but not as hard as going undefeated in SEC football. Outside of Memphis in C-USA could you name another team that could actually go undefeated in their conference, in terms of basketball?
