Hotline Hot Topic: The NFL Draft...

What'd you think? How'd your team do? Who were the winners, who were the losers?

Here's my thoughts on the Draft this year:

1. It's so easy to get excited about watching the draft, then when you actually start watching, you realize how absurdly long it is. Painful, just painful.

2. I think everyone in America believes the Dolphins made a massive mistake in passing on Quinn. For me, the problem wasn't neccessarily that they passed on Quinn, it was more that they took Ted Ginn at #9 when they could have gotten him much farther back. He probably would have gone off the board around #18 or so if they had worked out a deal and could have gotten an additional second round pick. Not a good start to Cam Cameron's tenure.

3. The Browns had an excellent first round. We obviously won't know for a while how all of these picks will work out, but Quinn has to feel good that he's got a top 3 pick protecting his weak-side. As long as Thomas doesn't go Robert Gallery, Quinn should at least have a chance to prove the doubters wrong without spending most plays on his back.

4. I gotta interject my bit about the Falcons. I thought they had an excellent draft. The fact is that as a team, we were exposed over the past two years. We had very little depth and a major deficit in talent in several areas, and I think we were very smart to pull 11 picks out of this draft. I'm particularly excited about our top 3 choices. When Anderson came off the board at 8, I was not overly thrilled, but the fact is that he does fill a major need of ours. Our second round actions were excellent. OG Justin Blalock from Texas will be a solid upgrade to Matt Lehr. I'm pretty excited about our secondary next year. We didn't get Landry, who I really wanted, but we do have a playmaker in Jimmy Williams and we've enabled him to move to Free Safety for us by bringing in Chris Houston at our weakside corner. D-Hall, Houston, Jimmy Williams, and Lawyer Milloy with Chris Crocker filling in when Milloy retires should be a solid upgrade from our horrendous pass defense. So thank you, Boyer in the District, I'm hog-wild about some of your Razorbacks.

5. Oakland had a lot of holes to fill, and it was smart of them to draft Jamarcus Russell instead of Calvin. However, I don't like that they only took one offensive lineman in the draft. Considering how many times Andrew Walter got hammered last year, they still have work to do on their protection.

6. I despise calling the Super Bowl winner before the season because the NFL is a crazy league and anything can happen. But my god the Pats look very dangerous.

Thanks man. By the way, Chris Houston was one of the strongest players in the draft this year. And don't be too disapponted in Anderson. He's a freakin' beast, and better still, has very upstanding character.

I HAVE to pull for the Falcons now.

Well, I was right about the Skins. I swear to g God that organization has no clue how the draft actually works. The Browns had an amaizng draft, Oakland and really the entire Bay Area should be happy today (the 9ers don't look that bad)....Tom Brady is somewhere sleeping with an ex-girlfriend and smiling today.

I am going to go the other way on the Randy Moss acquisition. I am going to do this for several reasons. One, we need something to talk about, and disagreement is the best way to make something happen. Two, and most importantly, to think that Randy Moss can "change" seems like wishful thinking. Was Randy better behaved in Minnesota then he was in Oakland? Sure, but that doesn't mean he was a model of good behavior with the Viks either. The problem with Randy Moss is that he takes plays off. Correy Dillon and Terrell Owens might have been locker room distractions, but they never took plays off. To me, there really is no greater sin in sports then not playing hard every play. Mouthing off to teammates or ignoring your coach or having your own entourage in the locker room are all regrettable actions, but these acts don't disrespect the game as much having a guy who doesn't think enough of himself or his team to play hard on every down. Randy Moss has become nothing but a distraction and a headache at every stop (he was thrown out of Florida State for godsakes), and I don't think Homeless Billy or the Golden Boy can teach this old dog a new trick - being part of a team.

Also, Darrelle Revis and the Mangenius are going to have Randy on lock-down, so the Pats are playing for a Wild Card berth at best.

I agree that Moss probably isn't going to turn over a new leaf. That doesn't mean that he's not going to gain an astronomical amount of yards in pass-happy Patriots system.

Keep in mind Moss wants to be in New England. Green Bay was knocking on the door too, but Moss had nothing to say about heading there. He wants to win a Super Bowl, period. He's even restructuring his contract so that it fits into the salary cap for the Pats. You think he's over the hill? He ran a 4.29 in the 40 last week. He ran sub 4.3 on 3 out of 4 runs. He's not over the hill, and you can bet your ass he's going to make that team much better. A LOT better than Reche Caldwell or Jabar Gaffney (thank you Dr. MZ for helping me remember his name).

By the way, I hate to say it too. But there's just no way around it. Brady, Maroney, Moss, Stallworth, Ben Watson, and arguably the best offensive line in the NFL. Ouch.

He makes them better if he stays in line. The Pats are not a team that have had to play surrounded by player distractions (and Tom Brady's love life doesn't count). How will they respond when Randy complains after a game that he isn't getting enough touches. Tom and Homeless Billy like to spread the wealth and get the ball to a lot of recievers, if Randy gets upset, will he be the distraction that the Pats have been able to avoid all these years?

The Pats handled Corey Dillon, another real ass's ass, just fine -- I think Randy Moss will be all right there.

As a loyal Jets fan i am petrified of the Pats getting Moss......it might eventually turn into a problem for at least one year he will stay in line ala TO's first year in Phily......god dam i hate the patriots (thank god the Bill are poor and the Dolphins are stupid)

Honestly, as a Packer fan, I was VERY skeptical at the possibility that Moss might come our way. Sure, it would give Favre a deep threat and take some pressure off Driver and Ferguson, and open up more running game options (wait - WHAT running game?).

Also, Brett Favre is arguably the ONLY player in the NFL who could handle Moss if he tried to go Pacman Jones.

Whatever - he'll do alright in NE, but I think it's far too early to start calling them the clear Super Bowl favorites for next year.

As long as he keeps dropping lines like "I play when I wanna play" and keeps making me laugh -- I don't care who Randy plays for, as long as he keeps playin.

"Aint nuthin but 10 grand...what's 10 grand to me?"

Stanimal hit the nail on the head...Moss wants to play in NE. That makes all the difference in the world. One things for sure...this ensures the JETS won't make Super Bowl for a few more years. So that tab at Porter's might be open for awhile.

"But, you know, I don't want any kids, you know, watching this taking a lesson from me as far as 'Well, Randy Moss used it so I'm going to use it.' I don't want that to get across. Like I say ... I have used [marijuana] in the past. And every blue moon or every once in a while I might."
