The Commies who just recently cracked the coaches' top 10 poll will be taking on the number 20 Arkansas Razorbacks tonight in the first game of both teams SEC schedule. The Lady Razorbacks are 15-1 this year, but really have only played one game of much note as they were destroyed by #2 UNC in the latter part of November. Still, no 15-1 team is worth looking past and while the male counterparts might make a mistake in doing that, I think we can all say that the women will still be well-prepared for this game.
The Razorbacks have two accomplished scorers in G Donica Cosby and F Laura Ervin. Ervin was a junior college transfer and was the Southern California JUCO player of the year before transferring to Arkansas. Cosby is a three point threat as she has hit 40% from beyond the arc this year. Also of note is junior point guard Brittney Vaughn, who averages 5.9 assists per game as well as 2.3 steals per game. Last year she hit a buzzer-beater to send the Commies and Backs into overtime, which eventually ended in an upset win for the Backs.
Keys to the game will obviously be Carla Thomas and a dominating post-performance, but in addition Dee Davis will need to match up with Vaughn's speed. Dee has played well on defense this year and should be up to the task. With a solid performance from Caroline Williams and others stepping up to the challenge, the Commodores will be able to start their SEC season 1-0.
