In a tough loss at Cameron Indoor Stadium, the Vanderbilt Women's Basketball team fell to Duke 69-48. While the ladies' turned out some admirable performances, including a 14 point effort by Carla Thomas and a 12 point effort from Dee Davis, the Lady Devils proved to have a few too many offensive weapons as they had four players score in double figures. Alison Bales led the Devils with 16, while Abby Waner and Wanisha Smith had 14 and 13 respectively.
Vandy played the Devils tough in the first half as they held Duke to just 29 points, 11 of those off of offensive rebounds. The Lady Dores came out strong in the second scoring the opening four points to cut the lead to 3. But they couldn't get any closer as Duke held them at bay for most of the second half before stretching the lead in the final four minutes.
Still, Vandy held the Blue Devils to their lowest point total of the season against their opponents which have included #21 Rutgers and #22 Texas. Vandy shot a rough 33.3% from the floor to Duke's 43.8%. They did force Duke into a season high 23 turnovers, an outstanding accomplishment. The Lady Dores will take on South Florida this Sunday and will participate in the Holiday Classic in Nashville on the 20th and 21st.

You gotta admire the Duke defense. They've played three Top 25 teams so far and are 9-0, having held every team but TWO (Marist [51] and Texas [52]) to under 50 points per game.
The now-#12 Lady Commies have nothing to be ashamed of. They're in for a great season.
Couldn't agree more. Duke is a tough squad, and the Lady Commodores are STILL 8-1 with that loss. I wouldn't be surprised if this team captures a top seed in the tournament come end of the season.

now let me state very clearly...i am certainly not an expert on womens bball.....and unless i get hit by a giant rock from outer space....or my lovely bride of 30 some years tell's me i should be an expert??.....i will never be.....
but "stanimal"....a top seed...i assume means #1 in a ncaa region??......
vandy could be possibly the 3rd best team in tn.....

Bummer that the women didn't look that good on that night, but Duke is supposed to be #4 in the nation.
And by the way, our wbb team is proud representatives of Vanderbilt University, known as Commodores (or of course 'Dores for short). Leave the sexism for UTK and whatever other SEC schools want to join in.
PhilipVU94, thanks for the post. From time to time we use the term "Commies" in a lighthearted way when referencing the Commodore sports teams, both men and women. No sexist connotations, but I like to see that you're looking out for ladies and keeping us in check (someone needs to do it).
Well we shall see who the best team is in the state when the 'Dores take on Tennessee on January 25th. I certainly think this team can compete for a top seed in the tournament if they play well through the SEC. As for MTSU, well you played Maryland tough and beat Georgia, then got hammered by Tennessee in a 24 point dogging.
I'm not saying it'll be easy to capture a top seed, I'm saying that it's possible.
I apologize if the title of the post appears sexist, that's the way we were taught to distinguish between men's and women's athletics.
Oh, I couldn't care less that you call them the "Commies"; I just meant that you shouldn't treat the women like the JV. :-P
