SEC Statement on the end of the Vanderbilt/Tennessee Game

This was tweeted by SECPRGUY

Statement from Steve Shaw, SEC Coordinator of Officials concerning final play of Vanderbilt-Tennessee game:
"On the last play of the Vanderbilt-Tennessee game, in overtime, the Tennessee defender intercepted the pass, his knee did not touch the ground and he returned the interception for a touchdown. During the play, the head linesman incorrectly ruled that the Tennessee player's knee was down when he intercepted the pass by blowing his whistle and giving the dead ball signal. The play was reviewed as if there was no whistle on the field and as a result, overturned the incorrect ruling. By rule, if there was a whistle blown, the play is not reviewable."
(Emphasis added). The SEC has admitted the error, which is admirable, but the head linesman should never officiate another college football game again. It shows a complete lack of integrity on his part not to say "I blew the whistle." If he did say something, than the referee should be suspended for getting bullied into reviewing an unreviewable call. Additionally, the replay offical heard the whistle. This mistake is so avoidable, that you can't blame Commodore fans for thinking the fix is in.

That being said aren't u glad they got the call right? Who wants to win on an awful call?

The officials didn't throw the interception.

I am not saying I want to win on an awful call. I get that the ultimate call was correct. But I have a real problem with rules being ignored. That's what happened.

Vanderbilt is entitled to the same chance in games that every other SEC team is. That's the point. The referees made a bad call. And they compounded it by ignoring their own inadvertent whistle. Vanderbilt wasn't given the chance to make another play because the referees decided they would ignore one rule in order to get the larger call right.

If you are OK with that, that's fine. But that's what happened.

I would be more upset with Rodgers. If he doesn't throw a pick none of this ever happens. Y'all didn't get robbed. Tennessee would have been robbed if the call wasn't reversed.

You are missing the point, anonymous. The point is that if the whistle isn't blown, Vandy well may tacklethe guy before he scores; remember, they are supposed to stop player on the whistle. The point is also that this kkind of stuff happens to Vandy over and over and over. I pull very hard for several teams which are fabulously unsuccessful and unlucky,. But I never have anything to complaint about in terms of officiating with them; officiating has nothing to do with their losses and bad luck.

Vandy is uniquely and shockingly different. Bad calls happen to us over and over and over again. One has to ask just what in the world is going on.

I think you are missing the point and viewing the situation with very biased vandy goggles. What's the purpose for flags anyway? Answer: to keep the game fair and equal. The undisputed correct call was made in the end. Keep whining about a call that in the end was correct and you can't deny that, or lay some accountability on your terrible kicker for missing two FGs and your QB for having 4 turnovers before you complain about the CORRECT OUTCOME. It wouldn't matter if they had blown a fog horn. Gordon was headed to the house untouched either way. Go back and look at the replay. No Vandy defender was anywhere near a position to make a tackle; moreover, no Vandy player acted like he had heard a whistle so the argument of the effect of hearing a whistle is out the window.

Again, the "correct outcome" you are talking about is a return for a TD. You cannot say that that was the correct result when the referee blew his whistle - you have no way of knowing what the play would've been had the referree not blown his whitle. The "correct result" when the whistle blows is that the play is over. PERIOD.

I really enjoyed the game but hate the outcome. While I thought that the officiating was not very good, my frustration was with the repeated mental mistakes especially on the road. Relatively easy missed field-goals; foolish clipping penalty by an O-lineman on the 80 yard reception by Boyd (the clip was 50 yards from the actual play); several very bad throws by Rogers (which he even admitted); and finally some very questionable play calling with Vandy having the ball at our 40 yard line with 2 minutes left in regulation. I hate the way the game ended but we should have NEVER been in that position to begin with. It was a long ride back to Nashville last night....Let's go get Wake. It will make us all feel much better next weekend if we can make a bowl game after beating Wake. Go Dores !!

You have play all the games with the same set of rules. I officiated football for many years and following the rules is your job. The only thing that is worse than blowing a call is cheating so you as officials look better to make it right. The officials knew that there was an inadvertent whistle. By pretending that it did not happen the white hat/head official should be sent back to high school and learn integrity. If you remember a couple years ago it happened in the NFL to Ed Hochuli in a SD game. As much as he did not want to admit that he made a wrong call he did. Because he is human and a professional he sucked it up and took the criticism for it. Tenn would have still probably won the game so great job to them but shame on the officials for cheating to make themselves look better.

Anonymous 12:51 nailed it.

There is a reason why this "keeps happening to Vandy".....because you've never been a good team, and never will be.
