ESPN's Andy Katz: SEC Coaches Consider Reform - Basketball Nation

As Andy Katz notes today, the SEC basketball coaches are again considering reform when it comes to the conference tournament. There are two options for this reform:

1) Dissolve the present two-division, six-team format in favor of a 12-team, no division set-up a la the ACC.

2) Re-seed the conference tournament to enable the teams with the best records to have a bye.

The third option is to keep the conference tournament the way it is.

What are your thoughts on this? Weigh in.

Option 2, it keeps the natural rivalries in place but rewards the teams with the best record in the tournament. Frankly, I think the way the SEC Baseball Tournament seeds is correct: Division winner with the best record is #1 seed, other division winner is #2, seeding determined by overall conference record.

Option 2 all the way

Option 1!!! I'm yelling this!!! Honestly, can anyone see the SEC West (outside of Alabama) getting better in the near future?

Andrew VU '04......Why? #2 is better for Vandy...much better. We get the benefit of playing a tougher conference schedule (2 games against UK/UF/UGA/UT/USC and only one against the SEC West teams) plus the benefit of higher seeding come tourney time.

I really don't want to ever have to play Auburn twice a year. It will kill our strenght of schedule and a win is no real benefit.

I love playing all the east teams twice. Don't want that to stop.

why have divisions?dinting

Glad they are talking this and fully agree we don't want to play SEC west more than we have to..... Can we have option #2 and make some trades of SEC west teams with the ACC?

Anything but #3, up to and including using lotto balls for seeding. Not that it matters, the West schools will vote in a bloc to prevent any change, then resume ignoring anything not football-related.

Option 1 is better than Option 2 if it pertains to the conference tournament only. If it's a dissolution of the divisions entirely, that's a different story.

By the way, here's what the schools actually determined: (via anchor of gold) "Instead of seeding all teams 1-6 by division, teams will be seeded 1-12, with the top 4 receiving a bye." That's what I wanted all along.

one coach voted against it - inquiring minds want to know

That coach was Rick Stansbury. I think the reason is obvious. Of course, his pretext is that it hurts the fans, namely, his fans. But I'm fine with that since our fans are hurt by the opposite.
