Washington Post Reports James Franklin will be Vanderbilt's Next Head Coach

Eric Prisbell, who reported Sunday that Gus Malzahn would be coming to Vanderbilt, claims that, according to 2 sources, Maryland's Offensive Coordinator James Franklin will be Vanderbilt's next coach. No terms were discussed in the article. While I am inclined to believe the story will ultimately be true, absent a PDF copy of a signed contract, I'm skeptical.

I feel bad for Franklin. The problem is that after this whole Malzahn mess anybody except maybe Jim Harbaugh or Jon Gruden was going to be a let down. I went to the Wake Forest game and the stadium was pretty much empty. Hopefully Franklin is ok with that b/c unfortunately that's what he's going to get from day one. People are not happy with going out and hiring a coach whose offense was one of the worst in the country last year against very bad ACC competition. Of Maryland's 8 wins last year, I believe only 2-3 of them came against teams with winning records. In the games they lost (to "decent" teams like Clemson, West Virginia, and Miami) they never put up more than 20 points. I don't understand why we refused to go out and hire Greg Roman. Apparently he was a finalist and was really interested in the job. Harbaugh has continued to rave about him and he clearly knows what it takes since his team is going to a BCS bowl game, was 11-1, had the QB who will most likely be the #1 pick in the draft next year, and did it all at a school with arguably harder academic standards than Vanderbilt. Oh, and Stanford also has the #11 recruiting class in the country for next year according to Rivals so he clearly knows how to recruit as well (or at least has spent time around a staff that does).

Booooooo Williams every chance I can get! Though it will only be at basketball games now, I'll tell y'all that much.

Ill wait to see how the offseason goes before I get my tickets. If he puts together a good staff and brings in some recruits, he is supposed to be a stud at recruiting, then Ill renew my tickets. Also, I hope they put they continue with the upgrades they promised Malzahn.

I'm all for waiting for the offseason for waiting to get tickets but here's a few things I've looked at so far. Maryland, for as great a recruiter as Franklin is supposed to be, which by the way has easier standards than VU as far as getting athletes in, if it was in the SEC would have still had the worst recruiting class in the conference according to Rivals (http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/teamrank/2011/all/all). Even UK was higher. The only team it had a better recruiting class than in the SEC was us (but even Duke had a better recruiting class than we did).

Also, what I've been told (by sources close to the situation) is that one of the sticking points for Malzahn was that Williams was not willing to budge on relaxing certain standards for players but also that he was not willing to commit to certain facility upgrades that Malzahn wanted. Now I don't know if this is true so take it all with a grain of salt, but as far as facility upgrades, take me as a lifelong Vandy sufferer to say, "I'll believe those when I see them."

Yea I dont believe that about Malzahn. Williams has to enforce the standards, there is no reason to lower them cause the kids wont be able to cut in VU classes. As far as the facilities... I dount that too. Williams knew this would have been a HUGE hire and everything Ive heard is he gave Malzahn everything he wanted. In the end, he leveraged this position to get a raise. End of story.

Theyve done the facility upgrades for everyone else, I just dont know why they wont for football.

I totally agree. Hawkins Field is one of the best baseball facilities in the country and Memorial is still my favorite place to watch a basketball game. My point was merely that I will believe those so called "promises" of facility upgrades for football when I see them.

Agreed, interesting note... Rivals just posted an article about WV football and mentioned Franklin is the lead candidate to be the next head coach at Pitt. At least someone else wants him, maybe he is worth it...

I'm glad that we're not the only ones that noticed the shoddy reporting being done by the Post. CBS Sportscalls Prisbell out too http://goo.gl/cofFb

I think he's right this time, for better or worse.

I've been watching VU football for 25 years and can understand why they're having a tough time finding a coach. VU just can't compete in the SEC. The school doesn't have any football legacy.

ESPN is now saying it Franklin will be the next head coach at Vanderbilt. He told Maryland he plans to accept the job. More of a reliable source than that dip shit from the Washington Post.

Please don't tell me you think Joe Schad's "sources" are reliable.
