Washington Post: Door Reopened for Maryland's James Franklin

Granted, the Washington Post reported last night that Gus Malzahn was going to be Vanderbilt's next coach. Still, there is reason to believe Eric Prisbell has sources close to Maryland's James Franklin, Vanderbilt's purported second choice. I know I am now incredibly skeptical of all "reports," but one can't help but think Maryland's coach in waiting wants Vanderbilt to know he's still out there.

Man I am just not enamored with Franklin. He is supposedly a great recruiter but i have heard he isn't known as an outstanding x's and o's guy. We need someone who is gonna coach up the guys we get and or a guy who is a innovator on the offensive/defensive side of the ball (or ideally both). I just don't think having a "great recruiter" with out at least one of the other things is going to make this program a consistent (and I mean 6 wins a season) winner.

I don't know. I just don't know.

In all fairness, I think that its more important that Franklin brings in capable coordinators than it is his present success as a coordinator. Of course, if he chooses to run the offense I'll probably be a little less enamored since Maryland has been so-so offensively of late, but success as a coordinator doesn't necessarily equate to head coaching success.

Don't underestimate the power of great recruiting. You win games with talent.

But dont you agree that no matter what we will never be a recruiting powerhouse? We are always going to be out-talented by everyone in the SEC. Which means scheme and ability to coach up players are much more important to Vandy.

Actually, I don't think we're always going to be outrecruited. Perhaps in comparison to the Florida's, Georgia's, Alabama's of the SEC, but not every program is dragging in five stars yearly. The conference is top heavy for sure, but I still believe we can recruit competitively (should read, not the best, but good enough).

Now, you are right that its not ALL recruiting, but its clear at this point our talent must improve across the board. Our biggest problem has been the inability to finish games, and that comes down to depth issues. So I agree that we need more than just a recruiting boost, but if Franklin is also enthusiastic about the job, I'm not worried about him coaching the guys up.

Well Gus screwed us. He knew what he was doing, which was good business. Unfortunately we came out on the losing end, so let’s talk about Franklin because I don’t think he would be that bad.

First off he’s a young guy who a lot people believe is an up and coming coach. He’s 39 and a coach in waiting, obviously Maryland likes this guy for a reason. He has ties up in the east which could be an advantage for the Dores. What if we started recruiting the smart kids from the high schools up north? Aren’t they smarter up there anyway? The ACC values academics way more than the SEC so why not go after so recruits from the north.

Second, Malzahn was our top choice because not only is he an offensive guru, but his name is worth 1.3 million as an assistant apparently. Franklin obviously has made an impression on the Vandy search committee or he wouldn’t be in this position. Say what you want about his record, but a head coach hires coordinators, coaches, assistants and recruits. If he brings in some great coordinators (like how Gene got Gus) and recruits his butt off, this could be more interesting than a lot of our fans are giving credit. Again, he has something the search committee likes so this ship isn’t sunk yet.

Will it be a flashy hire like Gus? No, but it could be a smart hire…

Franklin... snooze. Done nothing to prove he can win in the SEC. Vandy needs a splash hire. Mine as well close up shop and re-invest the $ in women's bowling sans a big hire.

I'm out if we don't get someone bigtime. This sucks!

Well cya then! Cause its not going to be a big time hire... the other 3 candidates are all young and up and coming coaches

Here's a name to throw out: Major Applewhite. I'm sure someone can tell me why that's a bad idea, so have it.

For the record, I will be content bordering on happy with Franklin. I've heard good things about the guy and know he was impressive during his in-person interview in Nashville.

One problem that I have with Franklin is that no one knows him the south. His recruiting ties are mostly on the east coast.

One reason I was excited about Gus was that he has ties in Arkansas and Alabama. He could recruit well in two states that border TN.

From a reputation standpoint, Franklin would have to start from scratch. I don't see that working well for him. Especially with his lack of an impressive offensive resume.

So, really Franklin's only plus is that he is supposedly a good recruiter??? And that is really an unproven commodity in the south.

Say no to FRANKLIN!

He's helped to guide maryland, MARYLAND to two 8 win seasons and secured his boss a job. I really think Williams gets the importance of this hire or he wouldnt have promised to give Malzahn anything he ever wanted. If Franklin really wowed the folks in Nashville they must see something. The ties in the south are slim but we've never been a power in the south. Sure we will get some good recruits every now and then but lets try and move our recruiting to other areas too. With state schools like Arkansas and Alabama, its going to be hard for us to be serious players in those states. Smart kids are in the northeast part of the country, maybe we should try to recruit in those areas.

Applewhite is less proven than Franklin in my opinion. Plus, I heard they wanted him as OC at Texas.

Bobby, I have been yelling for Major Applewhite for a few months. Let's make this yell louder.

What about Kirby Smart, Alabama's defensive coordinator? He makes 750k per year and there is no buyout on his contract if he takes a head coaching position.

He was the previous Broyle's award winner and has developed several great defenses. Smart wouldn't be a stupid move.
