Jeff Lockridge reports in today's Tennessean that Vanderbilt many not make any final decisions until they have a chance to talk to Navy Head Coach Ken Niumatalolo. This is the first time Niumatalolo's name has been mentioned in connection with the Commodore vacancy. It appears that the search process run by Vice Chancellor David Williams, notable for the professional, and largely private manner in which it has unfolded, is vulnerable to that which all search of this kind are susceptible: leaks. The Lockridge piece includes information that representatives for Vanderbilt contacted Utah's Head Coach Kyle Wittingham about the position, but that Wittingham was not interested. Perhaps most notable, the story mentions Vanderbilt's (largely unsuccessful) efforts to interest Auburn Offensive Coordinator Guz Malzahn in the position.
Lockridge's story lists Stanford Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman, Michigan State Offensive Coordinator Don Treadwell, Maryland Offensive Coordinator James Franklin, Nebraska Offensive Coordinator Shawn Watson and Tulsa Head Coach Todd Graham as the other candidates Vanderbilt has spoken with and is considering.
The Washington Post's Eric Prisbell reported last night that the Terrapin's Offensive Coordinator, James Franklin, was one of two finalists along with Stanford's Greg Roman for the position. Big Red Today reports that Nebraska's Shawn Watson is not one of the finalists for the vacancy. Finally, according to a source for FootballScoop.com Vanderbilt will make a decision today.
