Tennessean: Vanderbilt "Close" to Hiring Franklin
This, according to Jeff Lockridge's report just posted on the Tennessean's website. While I've come to feel down right stupid for posting these updates, this one comes with a source who's name actually appears in the story (imagine that). The source is John Ingram,, a member of Vanderbilt's Board of Trust and the coaching search committee. According to Ingram: "We’re about to have this all wrapped up." Vice Chancellor David Williams was unavailable for comment. Details on the contract are unknown (at least by me).

Not sure how much stock to put in Eric Prisbell these days, but he's confirming.
Oh and on a related side note, can we go ahead and just officially establish that Joe Schad has less than zero credibility as a sports reporter? In all honesty it has come to the point where whenever I read something he reports, I just go ahead and assume that the opposite must be true. This approach is working out great so far.
hire Mike Leach. He's the most qualified person still available.
The Washington Post's Joe Schad is reporting that Vanderbilt has hired Bill Parcells, who will work pro bono. Also Gus Malzahn has decided to come on as offensive coordinator and pay the school for the opportunity. Again, this is from the Washington Post's Joe Schad.
David Williams needs to be fired, and needs to be fired now. This coaching search has turned into an embarrassment. James Franklin is a terrible candidate who brings nothing to the table. He does not have any experience at school similar to Vanderbilt, nor does he have any notable football success. Maryland is not making an effort to keep him, and no one else wants him.
No one has yet offered any reason to believe that Franklin is a better candidate than Roman, who has experience at a far better academic school and much more impressive accomplishments on the field.
I hate to say this, but at this point I think it is clear that Vandy cares more about making a "progressive" hire than the right hire - not that these two goals are mutual exclusive. However, in this case I simply cannot fathom another reason for going with Franklin.
I was extremely excited when David Williams spoke about wanting to be competitive, etc. However, this hire demonstrates that is all bull.
What bothers me most, however, is how Vandy fans have so meekly accepted this hire. Yes, once Franklin is the coach we should root for him, and hope against hope for his success, but we need to let David Williams know we are displeased about the hire. If we don't, we cannot expect any better in the future.
I think one thing that is notable (and it could have been said in previous posted, I haven't read through yet) is Franklin's recruiting ability. He's consistently rated as one of the best in the nation. Sometimes, getting them onto our campus is half the battle for VU.
Just looking for the silver lining here.
I hate to take away your sliver lining, but media types say he is a good recruiter, coaches say he is a good recruiter, but unfortunately recruits don't agree. He has never landed a five star recruit. The best talent in Maryland leaves for Virginia Tech or Penn State. College Park is much better town than Happy Valley or Blacksburg. So he obviously can't sell location, which along with academics is one of Vandy's two selling points.
James Franklin well really help David Williams, John Ingram, and the rest of the Vanderbilt Board of Trust, loosen up their shoulders for the big pats on the back they will be giving themselves tomorrow.
I hope I am forced to eat every single one of these words, but no rational person could get excited about this hiring.
Haha everyone calm down! Im excited about this hire because I have no idea whats going to happen. Everything Ive heard about this guy is great and Ill judge him more harshly when I see the staff he pulls together. Until then, Im just going to wait and see. Go Dores! A new era begins tomorrow....

I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore. I am going to lunch today in Chattanooga with some VU alums and we will be starting a push to get DW fired.
