Breaking News: Malzahn Offered $3 Million; Maryland's Franklin Plan B

Hat tip to VandySports.com's War Room, who broke news of the supposed $3 million dollar offer to Gus Malzahn. The Tennessean's Jeff Lockridge advances the story somewhat, claiming Maryland's Offensive Coordinator James Franklin would be Vanderbilt's next choice if Malzahn is not receptive to the Commodores' latest offer. Lockridge makes it sound like this is not the first offer made to Malzahn, news to many of us following this search. According to Lockridge, Franklin "was back at practice in College Park on Thurs day night and acting like a man awaiting good news." It sounds like Commodore fans can expect to know who the next football coach will be very soon.

Vanderbilt Sports Line will continue to update this story by providing information from people with actual sources

I really hope Malzahn takes the offer. Malzahn's not my favorite, but I would much rather have him than Franklin.

Malzahn will really help with recruiting in Arkansas and Alabama and everywhere else too really. But especially Arkansas and Alabama because everyone in those states know him. No one really knows Franklin.

Ill believe it when I see it... something just seems off about us offering $3 million to a guy with no head coaching experience. This would make him the 4th highest paid coach IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL! I believe there was on offer, but $3 mill? I'm just not buying it...

I like the way the seach is coming to a close. Vandy fans should not complain about the money being offered. If you look at the competitive salaries of top assistants and coaching candidates, I am impressed that the administration is stepping up and being very competitive with money. Malzahn is the top asst this time around and if he doesnt get the money here, he will easily command that salary at another school. As Vandy fans we can't have it both ways; complain about wanting the best coach but not wanting to pay the market rate for the best man for the job. I think that David Williams has done a fantastic job so far. Let's get it done this weekend ! Go Dores.

If he turns the football program around permanently (not a single 7-6 record including a fluke bowl win without an offensive TD in the middle of a bunch of 2-10 seasons)...

then I say flash that mean green in front of him and see if he grabs at it!!

Look at it this way: Malzahn's QB last year was Chris Todd, who was not an SEC QB by any rational measure. In his first year in Gus's system, Todd set what was then an Auburn record for touchdown passes. Malzahn's offense set a single-season school record in his first year at Auburn, only to break it again this year. He took a team that was 110th in total offense prior to his arrival and shot them up to 17th nationally last year and now 6th this year (1st in SEC).

Before all that, the guy reignited the use of the wildcat formation in college and pro football when he looked around and saw who his personnel were at Arkansas. Then he went to Tulsa where his teams were #1 in the nation in total offense...And who was his right-hand man at the time? You guessed it: current Vanderbilt OL coach Herb Hand.
