First Of Many Posts Speculating Who Will Be The Next Black And Gold Head Football Coach

Jeff Lockridge is reporting that Temple's Al Golden (http://www.tennessean.com/article/20101130/SPORTS0602/11300327/Temple+coach+Al+Golden+on+Vanderbilt+s+radar) is a candidate for the coaching vacancy. I really like the idea that he 1) resurrected a TERRIBLE program and 2) is only 41. It worries me that he has no ties to the Southeast (coaching at UVA doesn't count), that Temple hasn't exactly beaten many BCS teams in his time at Temple (just UConn) and that his teams haven't been very good on offense (84th last year, 85th this year). And yes I acknowledge that we lost to UConn and have a worse offense than Temple but that doesn't mean those accomplishments are amazing or anything.

Anyway what do you guys think?

ESPN.com Insider UPDATE Special.....

ESPN.com Insider Joe Schad is reporting that Golden is no longer a candidate for the job. I mean the guy is a Penn State alum and figure he will be at the top of the guys vying for the job whenever JoePa eventually steps down.

Here is some good news, MrSEC.com has had two positive articles since their article earlier this week saying how pathetic we are. They are saying that Vandy is looking at Temples Golden, Stanford's Greg Roman (asst head coach) and Tommy Bowden. They are saying that this must mean that Vandy will spend the money on a coach and will commit to upgrading facilities. MrSec.com is saying all this is very positive and that Golden would be terrific for us. So all I know is that a site typically not supportive of us is impressed with the search and candidates, especially Golden. I don't know the merits of these candidates but I'm feeling good that Vandy seems to be aggressively looking to improve the program and will spend the money to do so.

The same things concern me about Golden that are mentioned, but he did turn around a program that wa kicked out of the Big East. Again, it got kicked out of the Big East. You have to be awful in order for that to happen and he has made Temple into a good program.

Im not trying to be a dick or take a jab at UT, but this would be a better hire than Dooley from Louisiana Tech. In my opinion, if a coach wants to make a name for himself, why not come to Vandy? He could be "the guy" who turned Vanderbilt into a competitive program if he consistenly (every 2 to 3) got Vandy to a bowl game. He would be a legend in the coaching world. Thats why I think we can persuade a good coach to come here and turn the program around.

Not that I put a whole lot of stock in Pat Forde's musings, but here's his view on Al Golden to Vandy:

"Golden's name has been rumored, but here's the startling stat on the boss of the Owls: In five seasons at Temple he's never beaten a Mid-American Conference opponent that finished the season with a winning record."

I can already hear the collective "Yikes" reverberating around VSL Nation from all those who've been clamoring for a "proven" coach. But just to be clear, his is just one name in the handful being discussed.

I would love a coach that is beaten yearly by a IAA team...

Please keep in mind how terrible Temple was and what recruiting situation he has. Al definitely sounds solid considering the circumstances.

And I really believe that if you want entertainment, then you need an offensive guy. But if you want wins then fastest way to wins is with a defensive coach. We have more talent on defense.

Also, Golden was a TE in college and in the pros. He has an understanding of offense.

If we were going to go with someone's inexperienced coordinator then I would rather try to get a coordinator from the NFL. There are several that I like in the pros.

Tommy Bowden is probably the front-runner at this point.

No buyout needed.
