Eastern Michigan Open-Thread

Commodores won huge, beating Eastern Michigan 52-6. I was there, but frankly don't have a lot to say. Vanderbilt dominated a weaker opponent, but with the Commodores now entering the meat of their SEC schedule, we'll see what this team is really made of.

I've state previously that VU shoots itself in the foot before the season starts by scheduling non-conf. games w/ opponents from major conferences (see NW and UConn games as proof positive). I've heard the argument that VU should be able to beat those opponents but it doesn't hold a lot of water. Instead of 2-3, had we played MTSU or Rice or any of a myriad of mid-major programs, we'd easily be 4-1 going into the heart of the SEC schedule. Instead, we're going to have to come up w/ 4 wins, which will not happen. If VU's lucky, it will not lose any more players to injury (like we did w/ Larry at the end of the season). Remind me again why I should follow or care about the season at this point?

Hope the big wigs got a ton revenue from playing against those major conferences. You'll need it to offset the potential lost bowl revenue.

Was there as well, and that kinda felt dirty. Came away with the opinion that Larry just isn't that great of a qb. And if anybody can explain to me why we kicked it onsides in the third quarter, I'd love to hear that. Right now it strikes me as at least a bit classless, and after the losses and penalties this year, I thought we at least still had class (although maybe the bottle throwing at the end of the NW game shouldve disabused me of that notion).

Wow!!!! We won decidedly and I am not sure how anyone can complain about Larry's play or the results. We won the game!! We won by TWICE the spread!! When was the last time Vandy doubled a double digit spread, much less one of more than 20!!! Great job team!!!!!

I agree with AD.....A little hard to get pumped up after a win against an awful EM team. The on-side kick did seem a little out of character for a Vandy coached team....(Caldwell's explanation for it seemed a little weak to me) it did seem a little classless. It's ok Thomas to complain a little about LS because this team can't measure itself against EM and needs for him to play well for us to have any chance. There are no EM's on the remaining schedule. With 2 wins, I really want to see a cpmplete game against an SEC team like (a really down) UGA this weekend. Judging from this weekend, Vandy will have to play very well in order to get wins against TN, Ken, and even a down UGA team that looked strong yesterday. Go Dores.

Even in the gawd awful Vandy team years, they always seem to upset a decent SEC team, last year excepted. Think UGA and USC (both away games) from a few years back. Clearly UGA is a prime candidate next weekend. The key to those victories has been the other team playing piss-poor, and Vandy not making mistakes.

The next Vandy victory MAY (and notice how I stress MAY) be vs. Wake at the end of the season, for a disappointing 3-9 season. But it would not surprise me greatly if UGA, UT and yes, even FL fall to the 'dores.

I can see one more SEC win and maybe a win vs. Wake in an empty stadium.

Or not.

We will finish with 2 or 3 or 4 wins.

That is certain. Just as certain as american idol still blows.

Larry Smith showed that he could come back from disappointment and throw some accurate passes. With confidence and improved accuracy, Larry Smith has the potential to improve. He won't ever be Jay Cutler, but Vandy can win with Larry Smith if he improves and the defense plays solid.

Our defensive line will have to dominate against Georgia for us to have a chance. Hopefully we can get the big fellas back healthy and get after their QB.

That onside kick was practice for a young kicker. Don't get to ruffled about it. We have to prepare and give ourselves the best chance to win. Having a kicker who is kicking an onside kick for the first time in game action can provide a lot of pressure. If you have done it before, even in a meaningless game, then it is a little easier. Also, I'm glad we did onside kick. I got to see Tate run the ball a little more and he really has a lot of potential. He could develop into a solid big back for Vandy.

Hey Bobby, Doug, Seamus, Stanimal and whoever else could be listening, can you please tell me how Duke steals two 3-star from middle TN??? Our o-line is terrible and we can't recruit our local talent. Don't we have like 11 0-lineman on campus? The two guys that I am talking about are Lucas Patrick and Cody Robinson. 3-star on both Rivals and espn. Check it out.
