How Did We Lose to Duke?

Someone please help me out with this.

Over the next several days, I expect we'll be hearing a lot of "same old Vanderbilt" talk. And the worst part about it is, based on what we saw today, on Homecoming no less...those people certainly have a point.

For now all I'm going to say is this: It looked like we were going to come back and tie it there down the stretch -- Mackenzi and Sean both chunked it pretty bad (Sean by not breaking up the pick on the 1 yard line). But we should never have been in that position to begin with. We held Duke to 28 yards rushing on 36 carries, held them to 250 total yards, created 5 sacks and forced 4 fumbles (though we only recovered one of them). How can Mackenzi Adams complete only 14 of 31 passes? How can we not run the ball with Jared Hawkins more (45 yards on 11 carries)? How can Hahnfeldt go 0 for 2 when he was a solid 70% for the first seven games?

I find it ridiculous that as well as the defense played to keep us in the game, our offense couldn't come up with more than one score at home, on Homecoming, coming off two straight losses, to become bowl eligible and maybe climb back into the Top 25...against DUKE!

We were 118th out of 119 Bowl Subdivision teams in total offense coming into this game. My guess is that number's not going to change much. Is it too soon for me to jump back on the "fire Ted Cain" train? No, I think I'll go ahead and say it: FIRE TED CAIN.

This sucks.

so true. I blamed Ted Cain for the State loss, and things have not improved at all. He has to go. If Bobby won't get rid of him, then that says bad things about him as well. I'm not saying fire CBJ, he's done so much for us, but he can't hold onto something that's not working, i.e. QB draws and Nickson starting.

Another thing, did this game feel like MTSU '05 to anyone else?

I just came from the game and I've got to agree 100% with Seamus' post. There is absolutely no continuity on offense. It doesn't appear as if there's any kind of "game plan," it's just calling a series of plays that have absolutely nothing to do with each other.

The level of predictability is amazing. Even our "trick play," the double reverse that we seem to run EVERY FREAKING GAME, is predictable.

Why wasn't more of a effort made to get Jamie Graham the ball? After the game he had against Georgia, you'd think there'd be a concerted effort to put the ball in his hands.

The most frustrating thing for me is this team doesn't appear to be getting any better. They are actually going backwards. Nothing makes me more nuts than hearing, "Same Old Vandy," but after today's showing, it's hard not to think the haters are on to something.

5-0 to dare i say 5-7. probably. mtsu '05 definitely rings the memory bell. same old vandy. same old vandy. same old vandy. florida just killed kentucky. i see a snowball's chance in hell of that game even being close. at kentucky... L, at wake... L. the only possible win i see is UT and we know they won't lay down. what a freakin' year. i can not believe this. 13th in the country to this.... when does basketball season start again? i saw ogilvy, taylor, and lance at the game. i saw someone with 'em that looked like a player who was limping around. hope nobody's hurt already. i'm looking towards the exhibition game nov. 9 when i can forget about football and hope basketball brings me back to the good ole days.

This just sucks. I have just seen this too many times. I agree with with the offense comments. How can they continue to be so flat when the defense puts it all on the line?

The defense out to kick the offenses' butts the next two weeks. Just wear their rear end out in practice and motivate them.

Quite honestly, I thought there was no way in hell that y'all lose that game to Duke. Granted, it was Duke, but this isn't the same Duke team we have all seen the past several years. I just enjoy (finally) seeing the fire in Vandy fans. This is awesome. I just hope that this isn't the prelude to what we wrote earlier this year:

Set Ted Cain on fire.

Fire Bobby Johnson. The buck stops with him, and I'm sick of this. This is my 7th season watching him, and he will never take us to a bowl. There is nowhere to go but up.

And if we won't fire him, he's going to leave for Clemson anyway.

Would most of these comments sound any different if they had been written by UT fans? Get a grip, people.

So we only go 7-5 on the season. I'll take it.
