The initial report is that the Pirates gave Pedro a 6 million dollar bonus. Other terms undisclosed.

More on this and the rest of rhe happenings in Vanderbilt sports (including a high-profile transfer headed to Nashville according to Brett Hait) to come this weekend.

Nice pick up - Was watching Baseball Tonight as well and getting worried

This transfer from Minnesota is another good sign: Of course wins are paramount, but loading the pipeline with talent is #2.

The fact that this kid was on Miami's radar screen is promising.

Jonathan Goff got injured in the second preseason game with a possible broke vertebrate. Does anyone have anymore information on his condition????

Man i didn't hear that, too bad for Jon. In other Vandy news, Brady Brown just became the school's 11th commitment. He is a 6'5 WR from Texas. According to Rivals that gives us 8 out of 11 recruits who are 3-star rated. A vastly higher number than any other year.

Senior Chris Nickson is the likely starter at Vanderbilt, but Johnson isn’t announcing it publicly. Most likely, Johnson is playing coy to force VU’s Aug. 28 opponent, Miami (Ohio), to prepare for Nickson and Mackenzi Adams.

Am I wrong, or aren't Nickson and Adams' styles pretty similar? What would Miami Oh have to prepare differently? Perhaps set their defensive backs 10 yards behind the receivers at all times to account for Nickson's errant throws...

Hey pal, it's pre-season, there's very little reason to be negative.

Nickson changes coverage schemes when he's healthy...MA has nice mobility while CN is a threat. In '06, on passing downs, teams were forced to dedicate one guy to "spy" CN so he didn't pick up first downs with his feet.

coach johnson on 104.5 this morning saying depth is major issue for defensive line. nothing new i guess but interesting for them to point it out. said he'd announce a starter at qb a few days before miami game

Really not trying to be negative, champ. More commenting on the similar styles CN and MA possess. Nickson has the bigger arm, but until I see him run this year, the memories of last year's back leg chucking in the Alabama game will be tough to suppress. Adams scrambles just as much as Nickson, and while he doesn't possess the top end speed, he manages to find the openings, and accounts for similar yardage on the run. If Nickson's back, great. I just need to see it.

What I'm confident in is the secondary, and I don't think the LB corp will drop off as much as some others. You can bank on the fact that I'll be struggling to find sports bars in Baton Rouge showing every Vandy game, with Body Paint Man (VU '06) by my side. Can't wait to see what John Cole, Udom Umoh, John Stokes, and the other youngin's can do... yet I don't see many reasons for wide-eyed optimism of the bowl drought ending this year. Nothing wrong with being rational.

Right: It's the preseason, so we all need to "see it," as you mention. I'm assuming that we'll see Nickson '06...if you don't then we agree to disagree until after the Miami game.

I am confident in saying that CN's wheels are significantly more dangerous to a defense than MA's. Go back to my earlier post: On 2nd/long & 3rd/long situations, in most cases a defense will accept the risk that MA will get a 1st down with his feet.

With a spy you either have only 3 DBs in coverage or you have to put 5 DBs in on passing downs...this is what I mean when I say that CN changes the defensive scheme and MA does not...That's how Michigan disrupted Vandy in '06: (and I guarantee you that every team studies that game plan) A 5 DB package and blitzing CN with a fast safety on almost every passing down.
