Bobby on the Hot Seat?

I don't think so, but this random blogger on Fox Sports who I've never heard of, does. I wonder if OlyDuck will draw the ire of Brian Cook's Fan House blog on AOL Sports (Have I mentioned lately that we will continue taking donations to buy Brian a razor and a gift certificate to Super Cuts?).

Matt Minor threw a gem, leading Team USA to a 1-0 victory over Cuba. Matt threw 6.1 inning, allowing just 4 hits and striking out 5.

MUST READ ALERT: The Voice of the Commodores sat down with the Man we Love to Hait for an interview in today's Nashville City Paper.

According to David Boclair in today's Tennessean, Jackson, Tennessee felt like Vanderbilt yesterday as Commodore fans traveled to see the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx face off against the Tampa Bay affiliate, Montgomery Biscuits and former Vanderbilt stand-out David Price. Price earned his 3rd Double-A win as the Biscuits beat the Diamond Jaxx 3-1. Going 7 innings, his longer start in Double-A, Price had a fastball clocked at 97 mph.

While there's not a lot of news for Commodore Nation right now, this is the best I could do. Rest assured, the VSL Football Preview is in the works.

Let's get the chatter going...

Since win did you begin referring to yourself on the third person? Are you trying to find a way to leave without making it look like you're quitting?

Is Oly Duck insane? Kansas's coach will be on one of the coldest seats in the country. He led a normal big 12 dormat almost to a national title game and has a good chance to get there this year. What an idiot.

Yeah, that guy is a moron. "One good season and suddenly no one is questioning his job". That's absolutely idiotic when you consider the fact that Kansas' football program is second fiddle to their basketball program, and that their season was not just good, but fantastic by their standards.

Bobby isn't leaving Vandy unless he does it of his own volition because he runs a class program that is much better than it was several years ago and is steadily getting better, even if it takes a step back next year. He embodies everything that David Williams is looking for out of a football coach and their program, and unless there is a total collapse of the program academically Bobby will be just fine.

For those of you with an insider password on espn.com the blue ribbon yearbook preview of Vandy football is up. They are pretty positive in their outlook (thinking if we get some breaks we can duplicate last year) with much less heralded players.

football is always fun, but i'm ready for basketball. i know, far away yet but still. this recruiting class has me excited. and two years from now will be even better for the program. and as long as ogilvy stays, i say 3 years from now we are legit final 4 threat. how awesome would that be. are they going to red shirt ANY of the newcomers or will they all play?

Stanimal said...

If any of the new crew are to be redshirted, my guess is that Goulbourne is the most likely candidate. With our lack of depth in the front court, I don't really see how we can redshirt Tinsley, and apparently Taylor is so supremely talented he'll be a contributor right away. Also, I think there's a greater need for Stevie T. down in the post than our need at the 3.

Some other basketball recruiting notes (including Jenkins rise) is that another big prospect we're eyeing, Ryan Kelly, just recently was bumped to a five-star prospect and has been named the number 17 prospect in the nation for the class of 2009. Vanderbilt is still very much in the mix for him.

Douglas James said...

I don't know the exact #'s but what would the advantage be of redshirting any of the big 4? We don't need to lower the number and noone is in Festus's position. Hinkle got hurt i believe. I think redshirted someone would actually hurt us in that it would basically put us out of the running for a 2nd guy in 2009 class. I'd love to get Ryan Kelly but doesn't he seem like the natural replacement for Psycho-T at UNC? Also on ESPN.com Shan was ranked #34 rookie (which includes guys like Oden and NBA D-League guys who weren't drafted this year)
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/rookies/rankings?season=2009&playerRankingType=1&period=1&set=3

Well, the recruiting game isn't over until the guy signs his LOI, so while Ryan Kelly may seem like a natural replacement, it doesn't mean that he is a replacement. As long as the field is open, we've still got a shot.

As to redshirting guys, you have a point. There probably isn't much reason to do it since all of them can come in and contribute right away.

byars scores 15 for magic. could two commodores make an NBA roster this year?

This place ranks vandy as the #50 bball team in the country. Although they list Keegan "And-1" Bell as a key reserve so they don't appear to be all that knowledgeable

Dude obviously didn't watch Goulbourne's highlight tape, he did nothing but bury threes the whole time

Douglas James said...

Besides that what do you think about that starting lineup? 1-Beal, 2- Tinsley, 3- Taylor, 4- Tshiengang, 5- Croc. Looks good to me. With tinsley switching to the 1 to spell Beal and maybe bring in Gouldbourne in as a big 2?

Stanimal said...

I think that's a legit lineup, but I highly doubt that's what we see from the start. Andre Walker and Darshawn McClellan are going to get minutes and I would bet Walker will be an immediate starter. We're also forgetting about George Drake, who really has an open door to show us that he was worthy of a 4-star rating.

I'm as excited as the next guy to see the new guys play, but we aren't completely depleted from last year. These new guys will have to earn their time.

Stanimal said...

Also, John Jenkins is continuing to impress the heck out of everybody. He headlines the ESPN College Basketball Recruiting Board. Apparently he is just lighting everything up. By the end of this whole process we might be looking at a five-star rating

Everything I see on him is positive. Early signing day can't come soon enough. With a strong senior season he has an outside shot (no pun intended) at being a McD's All-American.

Finally, AJC is reporting that Blake Southerland, an inside linebacker for Greater Atlanta Christian and the brother of Georgia Fullback Brannan Southerland, has committed to Vandy for next year

Douglas James said...

Nice. Doesn't seem to be that highly ranked but we only have 4 recruits so far so filling up the class with solid guys is important.

I'm really itching to see Festus and AJ at the same time. At the least, I hope Festus can cycle with AJ and keep fresh legs aboard. Gonna be a great Bball season!

We could also do well with football, with a few breaks (I know, our allotment of breaks is always limited). While we have lots of holes to fill, most of the players slated for those positions were active backups last year, so they do have experience. I hope we have a QB who takes off (and stays healthy).

Here is an article on Rivals.com about redshirting in college basketball. They talk about Festus alot and have some quotes from him and Stallings. I can't wait for basketball season to start and football hasn't even begun. The only times I have been this stoked going into a season was for the 99 and 05 Jets. Both years were crushing dissapointments but so is the life of a Jets fan.

I would like to comment on your responses to the article from The Hoops Report ranking Vandy as #50. I am Ryan Feldman and I am a co-founder/writer/editor for The Hoops Report. I did not write that article, but when editing it I purposely made sure it discussed how Lance Goulbourne is a slasher, not a shooter. I have seen him play in person many times. I have talked to him before. He is not a shooter. You may see him shoot 3's on a "HIGHLIGHT" tape, but if you have not seen him in person, then you really don't know. He may have the potential to be a good outside shooter, but he is definitely not a shooter. In the multiple games I've watched him play at Hun, he has maybe made a total of 1 or 2 3-pointers if that, if he has even attempted much more than that. He grabs rebounds, dunks, posts up, and runs on fast breaks. He is an athletic dunker. If he becomes a good shooter, good for him, but he is not that right now. Trust me. Also, Keegan Bell may not be a terrific player in some of your eyes, but he did play 14 minutes a game last season and will likely have even more this season, so that quakifies as a key reserve to me.
