Tempting Fate

While I appreciate the motivation and the effort to show that Vanderbilt can send fans to a bowl game, the "2007 Vanderbilt Football Bowl Petition" must be STOPPED. Immediately.

I don't know who came up with this idea, but whoever started the petition -- available at www.supportthedores.com -- is making a serious mistake that I can only guess is a result of being a novice at Vanderbilt sports fanaticism. I don't mean to be snobby in saying that (yeah, I kind of do). I think it's fantastic that people are getting fired up about this team and trying to bring others on board. Commie Nation is starting to show itself in full force. We love it. But the TIMING of this petition is a classic case of TEMPTING FATE.

Why do this? Why now? We're 5-3 and we need at least one more win just to be bowl-eligible...for the first time since 1982...following two seasons in which bowl eligibility was within a bad call or two from happening. I'm not usually superstitious, but I just don't see how we can run the risk of jinxing this season by signing on to this petition. Thus I hereby implore VSL Nation NOT to sign this petition until we have the sixth win under our belt. Who knows, you might only have to wait until Saturday evening to do that... Just don't sign it. Not yet. Please. For the love of God.

P.S. The team is aiming for 9 wins, not 6.

I will not be signing said petition...too much can happen with 4 games aganist the likes of Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Wake. If you really support the Commies, you won't sign until we reach win #6. If that happens, you can rest assured the VSL Nation will be everything in it's power to get that petition signed by as many Commies as possible.

I understand the potential of the 'jinx', but at the same time, I think it is important to show the commodore spirit, win or lose. By waiting until we get to 6 wins, the list of supporters will be those hopping on the band wagon. Supporting before 6 wins shows that Vandy has die hard fans, not just fair weather fans. As part of the Atlanta Alumni Association, we have a viewing party at Dantanna's every weekend the game is televised. Come on out to watch all the games, not just a bowl game.

If you have been taking the same precautions for the last few decades then I think it is time to let it ALL hang out. I personally grow tired of hearing my fellow Vanderbilt fans talking about fans doing something that can "jinx" a game or season. This effort could get real traction with enough signatures. Waiting until the 6th win could be THE JINX.

I agree...I come from a huge football family in Texas...grew up going to UT games (in Austin...the real UT). Vandy has a long history of being the weakling in the SEC...much like the Baylor of the BIG 12. The petition is not a jinx. Like another blogger said it's a way to show early support. Is it kinda sad and kinda pathetic that we have a petition going. Of course. On the other hand, you've gotta start somewhere. Vandy students and alumni need to show their support. Let's THINK WE CAN WIN and WE WILL!

Oh! And one more thing...Jay Cutler even signed the petition! Show the man some respect!
