Vanderbilt Hotline: Thursday Edition

No clever titles, just Vanderbilt football news this morning. As many of you have already seen, we posted the second installment of our Vanderbilt football preview yesterday, this time focusing on the Defense and Special Teams. Tomorrow we'll unveil the final installment of our football preview and focus on the Commies schedule.

Mo Patton, again double-dips in today's Tennessean, with his first article focusing on His Name Is' supporting cast, George Smith and Sean Walker. Mo's second article gives Vanderbilt fans some hope that Quavian Lewis might be returning to the squad next season. Lewis originally said he intended to transfer to a I-AA school, but now says he would like to be a Commie again. Patton's practice notes also highlight the continued progress of Myron Lewis at corner.

Brett (the man he love to) Hait has two articles in today's Nashville City Paper that are both worth a read. The first highlights how Vanderbilt is getting better and deeper in the defensive secondary. Hait focuses on the same statistics we did in our preview on the importance of Vanderbilt improving their completion percentage allowed, which was over 60% last season.

In Brett's second article, Hait takes the unfamiliar tact of putting Vanderbilt and Steve Spurrier in the same boat. Brett shows how Spurrier's recent dust-up with the admissions committee at South Carolina might give him some perspective on the difficulties Vanderbilt faces when trying to recruit a class.

Also, be sure to check out Nashville Ballerz for Brett's take on Jeff Jennings' progress and why Jared Hawkins didn't see more action last year.

For those in the Nashville area, Dore Jam is this Sunday from 4 to 6pm at McGugin. Tickets are free and you can more information on VUCommodores.com or by clicking here.

A short but sweet one today. There may not be a Hotline tomorrow, but we will definitely have the the final preview up on the schedule. Next week, we'll bring you my conversation with the Guru, a new VSL Podcast to get you even more prepared for football season, a thread where you send in your questions about the upcoming season, and unveil our new format for football season as the VSL boys' make a triumphant return to school.

Spurrier is a jerk. I am still bitter about his comment to SI that there are no Vanderbilt's in the NFL. If he is as good a coach as he thinks he is, he should take a job at a place like Vanderbilt and see what it feels like to have to turn away more than a couple kids for academic reasons. Vandy needs to beat his 'Cocks....

Checked out Mel Kiper's big board and his top 5 by position. No Vandy player made it to his big board (goff would be the only one close). On his top 5 by position for seniors Goff dropped from 1st to 3rd for inside Lb's and Williams went from tied for 5th to off the list. For juniors no Vandy players were listed. I can't believe EB was not in the top 5 WR's in his grade. I think this is mostly due to the fact that Kiper prob doesn't think EB's skills translate to the NFL. WHATEVER

Kiper's gotta get his head out of the clouds.

As for Spurrier, a friend of mine does the best "No Vanderbilts in the NFL" impression you've ever heard.

Let's be honest Seamus, his head is someplace much worse than that....
