It ain't about Vanderbilt...

But it's a big story in the world of sports.

Michael Vick was indicted by a Federal Grand Jury in connection with an illegal dog-fighting. Here is the story from ESPN.com.

As pretty much the sole supporter of the Atlanta Falcons among our readership, let me be the first to say that I am devastated by this news, although it was not entirely unexpected.

It might not be well understood by those who haven't followed the team, but Vick brought a spark to a franchise which had been hopeless. We had our miracle year in '98, reaching the Super Bowl, but then we collapsed again into sub-mediocrity. In 2000, when we drafted Vick out of Va. Tech, and when he came out in his rookie season and second season and flashed his ability, it convinced the entire Falcon fan base that things had finally changed. This all hit its peak in 2004 when we reached the NFC Championship.

Since then it's been downhill, and the football aspect of it hasn't all been Vick's fault. But over the past few years its come to light that Vick isn't really what he appears.

It's disappointing that this activity has gone on during the entire time he has spent captivating the hopes of the Atlanta Falcons, the fan base, and the NFL as a whole. It's really a devastating blow to this team. Vick likely will not be suspended in 2007, but this will hang over the team all year and doom us to a sub-standard season. I believe this year will be Vick's last.

Now some are going to say that trading Schaub was a mistake. NONE of this came out until AFTER that trade. At the time it was the right decision, because we badly needed to rebuild, trading Vick's contract would have killed us in salary cap penalties, and we likely would have lost an invaluable trading piece the next year to free agency. It was the right decision at the time.

Still, I am devastated by this news. This is devastating to the future of the franchise, and I think its safe to say that after this incident, the Atlanta Falcons and their fans no longer feel married to Michael Vick.

Vick isn't guilty yet, but he's certainly disappointed us all.

Also, I said likely will not be suspended, that doesn't mean won't. It's pretty much all up to what Goodell decides.

Sorry Stanimal, this situation sucks for your Birds.

Personally, I think Goodell has to come down on Vick to show he can't be pushed around and some consistency with punishment. That being said, I think Vick will get a suspension but I don't think it will be to the extent of Pacman or Tank.

I've often said that Michael Vick is among the top five greatest all-around athletes currently playing professional sports. It appears the case against him here is strong, but regardless of what the outcome of the case is, Vick can safely be called a tragic figure.

I'll add this: Anyone who treats dogs the way the Feds are saying they treated the dogs in this fighting ring deserves to spend some time behind bars in a federal [line from Office Space] prison.
