Vanderbilt Hotline: Why Do I Even Bother?

The lull has really set in. Still, we must forge ahead and give you all the Vanderbilt Sports news that I have bothered to find. Today's stories will come in no particular order. Vanderbilt's men's golf team earned a spot in the NCAA tournament and will head to Arizona State to play in the regionals. Vanderbilt's Lady Laxers will host a first round game in the NCAA tournament against Syracuse this Sunday in Nashville. Vanderbilt baseball is still #1, and according to Brett Hait in today's Nashville City Paper Ty Davis is "thriving in long-relief role." Bobby Johnson was interviewed on 104.5 The Zone, and the DC Dores look to extend their winning streak to 2 against South Carolina tonight.

Barry Gibb of the Bee Jees is the mentor tonight on Idol...I would be shocked if the disco theme doesn't include one of the ladies singing "I Will Survive."

Someday say something...PLEASE.

Welcome to college sports downtime.

At least the CWS is coming.

5 months until football season.

Seriously...I'm with Stan on this one.

I'll think about it over lunch, come back, and start a spirited debate. No promises it will be FULLY sports related.

Espn will "Finally" be showing the 1st year player draft for mlb....so we can see Price go #1 which is nice....

Stanimal said...

I appreciate the sarcastic "finally", I have the same thoughts. Aside from Vandy players who will likely go in the first round, let's be honest, watching the MLB draft is like watching paint dry. Very rarely do any of the players make an immediate impact, which is where the excitement comes from for the NFL and NBA Drafts. The MLB draft is exciting for the future I suppose, but hardly has any immediate gratification.

Bobby O'Shea said...

And we all know Stanimal is all about "immediate gratification."

Once again, I agree with Stan. I'd rather watch grass grow than watch the MLB Draft.

What else fits in that category? Glad you asked:

The WNBA
Anything NHL
The Olympics
The MLS All-Star Game
Bowling
Aerobics Championships
Lumberjacking Competitions
Anything on the Oh! network

I gotta say, NHL playoff hockey is fun to watch. With that said, the NFL draft, while entertaining, goes on WAY too long. If they were to cut the time between picks in the frist round from 15 to 8 minutes, the event would be a hell of a lot better.
And I happen to know that Oh! is Stanimal's favorite channel.

Bobby is trying to instigate controversy by throwing insults around here at the VSL.

However, his claims about my affinity for "immediate gratification" are a clever ruse to disguise the fact that he has a rather large library of titles on his computer that provide said gratification. Nice try pushing that one off on me, Bobby O'Shea.

As to the Oh! channel, I couldn't tell you a single show on it. However, considering the fact that "Bobby's Betty" is running his DC domain, I would argue that he is relegated to at least an hour or two a week of it, and has no doubt come to appreciate it as he did such titles as The O.C., Desperate Housewives, and Grey's Anatomy.

Boyer you are crazy....i'm not going to even get into the NHL argument w/ you cause that will end in me being taken away in handcuffs but you have to acknowledge how much lumberjack competitions rock....my favorite competitions are 1) the one where the guy climbs up a piece of wood by choping little holes to put planks for him to stand on 2) where they chop a piece of wood while on top of it (secretly hoping a guy will chop his own leg off ala radiohead "paranoid android" video 3) where contestants stand on a floating log trying to spin their oppenant off...1 face plant off the wood makes it all worth it....i must also admit that i watched "St. Elmo's Fire" on OH! yesterday but that was only cause it was the middle of the day and the new "Wire" dvd from netflicks did not arrive as expected.....

I think we perhaps should change the title of this thread from "Why Do I Even Bother?", to, "Let All of Your Frustrations Out Edition"

I'll say a couple things:

One, that computer got stolen. That fact is in no way an admission to anything alleged by the Stanimal, but merely a fact.

Two, while "Bobby's Beatty" does run the domicile, she is in no way imposes her show choices on me. I happen to like Grey's Anatomy. I am invested in the characters. When McDreamy and Meredith have a fight, I feel for one or both of them; when Christina indulges Burke's need for a big wedding, I appreciate her making the effort; when Alex acts like the decent guy he is, I smile. The OC was banned by the lady friend, although I still want to know how it all ended (I really did love Summer). I am over Desperate Housewives, something the Stanimal would have realized had he bothered to read my posts about the Sopranos.

But what does any of this matter? It really doesn't. This is how far we have sank, Stanimal and I trading insults via VSL when we can just as easily do it over GChat like we normally do.

I'd like to claim responsibility for waking the VSL readers (all 6 of them) up.

Look, I just don't like hockey. Can't get into it...and trust me, I've tried. I guess I don't "get" it.

As for the lumberjacking - that's fine. I just don't want it on ESPN. Lumberjacking is not a sport, just like bowling is not a sport. Both are recreations and/or careers (I guess).

Douglas James said...

The "E" in espn stands for entertainment and lumberjacking competitions are entertaining...much more so than shameless plugs for Disney movies and "dancing for the stars" promos that ESPN normally airs during "Sports"center.....in terms of good tv shows everyone should watch the wire it has all the things a good tv should have, cops, robbers, dock workers, drug dealers, sex, crime, violence, politics, humor....easily the best show in tv and since it takes place in B-more aka B-morgue it gives you D.C boys a chance to look down on a city for actually being more violent then yours....

Bobby O'Shea said...

Boyer, I don't think one can call bowling a "career."

Quote from the couch while watching Mayweather-De La Hoya this weekend:

"Dude, Floyd Mayweather Sr. looks like the predator."

"Yeah, either that or Otis Nixon."

Quote from the Sports Guy's Blog regarding the fight:

"As for Floyd Sr., he looks like a cross between Otis Nixon and the Predator. We might as well start there."

Stanimal said...

And Doug is right about the Wire, that show is phenomenal. I just got the first disc of the second season in the mail and I'm anxious to watch it. Season four was phenomenal and Season one is very good too.

Actually - NOTHING beats a good infomercial.

Easily the best wedding gift I've received thus far is the Magic Bullet.

I think that express cooker thing that the rather portly woman advertises is a total piece of junk.

The Ronco rotisserie machine actually works really well.

Deion Sanders never needed to even ATTEMPT to sell a freakin' hot dog cooker.

Otis Nixon is also the most tremendous crackhead in Atlanta Braves history. His rap sheet makes Darryl Strawberry's look like an Eagle Scout's.

Douglas James said...

At least he never pulled a Vince Coleman who through firecrackers at a goup of little kids who asked for his autograph while with the mets

i like watching lumberjacks

Douglas James said...

Does K Marshall know of your affinity for men in plaid? I once chopped down a tree out of someones front yard in nashville w/ a machete to make a christmas tree.....does that qualify as lumberjacking?

Everyone,

We fancy ourselves as lumberjacks.

Good job hunting down the men's golf selections. I was looking for the longest time and couldn't find them. Did they just come out?
