Commodores Wrangle the Bulls
The Commodores picked up a nice win over the South Florida Bulls on Sunday 76-68. Center Liz Sherwood led the Dores with 19 points and 13 boards, while Carla Thomas picked up 18 and Christina Wirth had 12 points and 11 boards.
The Dores ran the show in the first half, leading by as much as 13. In the second half, however, the Bulls rallied and took an lead early on. Sherwood's efforts were a major reason that the Dores regained the lead as she posted 10 second half points. At the 7:30 mark in the second half, Vandy took the lead and never looked back.
South Florida was unranked but certainly wasn't a cupcake team. Both teams came in with one loss, with South Florida's being to #18 Michigan State. The Bulls had scored over 80 in seven of their 10 games this season.
What I think is most notable about this Vandy team is the way that everyone seems to contribute. Carla Thomas is clearly the bedrock of the team, but the rest of the Dores do a great job of stepping up when they are needed. The performances from Sherwood and Wirth were huge for the Dores in securing the win, especially since Caroline Williams only had 5 points (she only attempted 4 shots). Each game someone seems to step up their play, and that is going to serve them quite well in extremely competitive SEC play this year. Well done ladies.
