VSL Hotline: Narrowing the Field, Edition

Jeff Lockridge reports on the coming and going of the deadline for players drafted to sign with their MLB teams in today's Tennessean. While Coach Tim Corbin lost a number of current players and recruits to the bigs, he was able to hold on to #1 prospect Tyler Beede, a RHP who was selected #21 overall by the Toronto Blue Jays. As Lockridge reports, however, it wasn't all good news as Kevin Commer, another RHP recruit, signed just before the midnight deadline. Commer was also taken by the Jays, although he was selected in the supplemental first round.

Vanderbilt juniors Jason Esposito, Grayson Garvin, and Jack Armstrong all agreed to terms with their MLB suitors yesterday. There was hope among the Commodore faithful that Armstrong might return for his senior year, giving Corbin and pitching coach Derek (apologies) Johnson another arm for the weekend. Will Clinard was the only one of the 12 Commodores on last year's CWS roster not to sign with the Major League team.

In other recruiting news, Vanderbilt's #1 basketball recruit, Alex Poythress, has narrowed his list of possible college destinations to 5. One of them is Vanderbilt, none of them are Tennessee. Rounding out the Clarksville native's list are Duke, Florida, Memphis, and Kentucky. According to the story in the Tennessean: "The 6-foot-8 senior is ranked as the nation’s 18th overall basketball prospect by ESPN. Rivals.com ranks him 38th overall."

Coach James Franklin announced that RB Welsey Tate will now be WR Wesley Tate. For more football coverage, be sure to check out VUCommodores.com's 2011 Fall Camp Blog. Also worth a gander is the VUCommodores.com's Five to Watch Series. The most recent installment looks at CB Kenny Ladler, although WR Jordan Matthews, WR Wesley Tate, and LB Chase Garnham have also gotten looks. Who will the 5th be?

Probably not good that Poythress didn't say anything about us. Looks like it's really down to UK or Duke.

It is significant that we are on the list with schools who have all won the NC. We have moved up to the top shelf of competition!

To me that is just a complete failure by the reporter in this story. How do you not get a quote.....ANY QUOTE about Vandy and Memphis. You know, the two local programs?
