BREAKING NEWS: Rajaan Bennett Murdered in Atlanta

This was first brought to our attention by Anchor of Gold. Here's the full story from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Reports are Bennett, a high school senior who had committed to Vanderbilt, was killed in an apparent murder-suicide. This is truly awful, and our thoughts and prayers are with Bennett and his family.

Just terrible news. So much promise just taken from a good man. Sad day for his family, and for the Commodore Nation that looked forward to him joining us.

Today there is something that sucks much worse than american idol and this news is it. Followers of college football in the south are in shock all over.

This tragic news is all the more saddening when you consider that this is a guy who had defied all the odds and overcome many obstacles in getting into Vanderbilt on a football scholarship and setting himself and his family up for a truly bright future. From all reports, he was a first-class and exemplary man -- and truly a "man" of his family and his community, in a way that most 18-year-old kids could not even begin to fathom. It was an honor to the entire Commodore community that Rajaan had chosen to make Vanderbilt his alma mater, and we can only express the deepest sympathy and sincerest prayers of comfort for the Bennett family's loss.

In an interview early this morning with the AJC, Bennett's high school coach was barely able to speak, but this brief exchange says it all:

Q: “He was a good kid wasn’t he, Coach?”

A: “Just one of the best ever.”

Just so tragic. I'm in utter disbelief. Hopefully Vandy does something to honor him on saturday.
