Vanderbilt built a early second half lead of 57-43, but barely escaped with a 2 point win after St. Mary's missed a three pointer to win the game with 2 seconds left. Brad Tinsely hit the first of 2 three throws, but missed the second, giving the Gaels a chance to win the game. Overall, a great game for the Commodores, who head to Maui 2-0 and with a legitimate test under their belts. For the second game in a row, Jeffrey Taylor lead the Commodore attack, scoring 19 points, grabbing 7 rebounds, and stealing 4. Dolla Beal hit some key shots late and finished with 16 points. Andre Walker had 14 on 6-8 shooting. Brad Tinsely was the Commodore floor general, handing out 8 assists in 28 minutes.
Vanderbilt turned it over 17 times (as did St. Mary's) and were a disappointing 14/22 from the charity stripe, a fact that almost cost the Commodores the game.
A.J. Ogilvy was not a factor, scoring just 2 points on 1-6 shooting in 22 minutes of action. Festius was equally unimpressive going just 2-5 and grabbing only 3 boards in 11 minutes. In total, A.J. and Ezeli combined for 6 points and 10 boards, hardly the kind of numbers we are expecting from the 5 spot. Compare that to Omar Sahman for St. Mary's, who scored 25 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in 35 minutes.
A win's a win, and Vanderbilt has to be happy to remain undefeated. We'll have more tomorrow and (hopefully) a preview of Vanderbilt's first round game in Maui against the Cincinnati Bearcats.

I'm disappointed with Festus but I've come to expect bad things from AJ. He is not an NBA player. And I don't think he ever will be.
The way he's playing right now he sure as heck won't be.
But, it's only a couple of games into the season. We'll see what he and Fez are made of yet.
AJ is turning into the next Pryziebsekiskeetskeet.... fun foreign player that we want to do well but will come up short when it comes to going to the next level.
Kyle Fuller was representing in the crowd last night.
Let's also not forget the importance of this victory. This was a tough road game, and Vegas knew it too. As a matter of fact, they made us -5 dogs in this game. This was a big victory for the Commodores and now we need to take that momentum and stick it to some teams in Maui.
Yeah the radio guys were killing AJ last night. On the flip side, they think Taylor is best thing ever.
I tend to agree.
AJ is vastly more talented then Dawid was and therefore right now is vastly more dissapointing to watch right now.
Great to escape on the road given the paint performance, lot of things to take away from it heading into Maui. Can't wait for Monday.

Does anyone who listened to the game know how our smaller set played - ie if we ever used lance, jj, steve t, and tinsley together on the floor?
Also, how do you all think we will do stopping the bearcats? From what I hear, they have pretty good dribble penetration. If they are in fact better than slater in the exhibition off the dribble we may be in deep trouble with our play in the paint.
Not sure about the small set. I do know that Lance didn't get too many minutes last night (only 4). Beal played a large majority of the game and I think Tinsley was only running the point for about 5 minutes.
We'll have a preview up soon on the game Monday, but as a precursor, I think we match up pretty well. It's going to be important for our bigs to stay out of foul trouble and we have to own the glass with our size. The tallest post player (who actually plays) stands at 6'9", and so A.J. and Big Fez should have the ability to play well on the boards. They don't shoot the three particularly well as a team, so defending inside the arc is going to be an important task.
