The lead was only five points at half, but Vanderbilt jumped out to a 10-0 run to start the second half and kept a solid lead the rest of the way, beating Iona by a score of 97-73 in Nashville. This win puts the team in the school record books, as they become the first group of Commies to start a season 13-0.
Foster and Ogilvy led all scorers with 20 points each (note: AJ was 4 of 6 from the field and 12 of 13 from the line; Foster moved into 8th place among the all-time VU scoring leaders). The Commodores got great minutes from Alan Metcalfe (14 points) and George Drake (10 points, his career high), among others.
The defense was MUCH better in the second half than it had been in the previous two contests, which should be encouraging as Vanderbilt heads into SEC play. First we have to get past Rice on Thursday and UMass on Saturday. Here's hoping the Commodores make a New Year's resolution to start the season 15-0.
The weekly polls held Vanderbilt steady at the #15 spot.
Have a safe and happy new year, Commodore Nation.

A 25-6 record going in to the tourney (i.e., winning 2 out of 3 of the 18 remaining games) should be the baseline for this team.

Go 'Dores!!
however, american idol still sucks
If we don't get better defensively we're in trouble. Iona lost to Louisville 67-37. Did we really allow them to score 73 points?
To say that I'm worried about SEC play is an understatement. I understand the "good teams find a way to win" adage, but the fact that defensively we have shown little to no improvement is not a good sign.
Just stumbled onto this site. Love the intense coverage, but what's this "Commies" stuff? Do you KNOW what "commies" means? Not a happy association. 'Dores, please.
Nah, I think we'll stick with Commies. You'll learn to love it, my friend. Welcome!
Arkansas football sucks.. go dores
"There defense wasn't tough at all," Springer said. "We could get any shot we wanted, anytime. We lost because of us, not them."
Willard said Vanderbilt's defense, "doesn't do anything that makes you worry," and that allowed his Gaels to stay in the game.
Wow... This is Iona talking, not some powerhouse.
They say the same things about the Phoenix Suns. Last I heard, the object was to score more points than the other team. How you go about doing it is immaterial. Now, would I like an improved defensive effort? Certainly. Perhaps replacing Neltner with Metcalfe in the starting lineup would help that. They've got a lot of time to improve, and if you think Stallings will let up on them in practice just because they're winning, you don't know CKS.
I second that Seamus, this is Commie Country!
Commies it is. Get over it.
Commies rolls off the tongue better than 'dores and I doubt the meaning is political.
But I'd still probably hang out with with a bleeding heart pinko Marxist Vandy fan vs. any TN fan, any day.

The Stallings quote, "We're not going to score 97 every night" following the Iona win is making me giggle right now. Vandy 97 - UMass 88. Apparently, we can.
