Vanderbilt Hotline

Last night former Vanderbilt enforcer Demarre Carroll was shot in the ankle outside a nightclub in Columbia, Missouri. Demarre, who transferred from Vanderbilt to play under is uncle, Mike Anderson, was treated and released according to the story in today's Tennessean by Bryan Mullen; the AP also had a story on the shooting. Details surrounding the shooting are not entirely clear at present, but given Vanderbilt athletics' recent history with nightclub incidents involving firearms, everyone in Commodore nation is relieved that Demarre is OK.

Brett Hait, in his role as SEC guru for the Nashville City Paper, has a piece on how integral Nick Saban has already become with the identity of Alabama football. Correctly, Hait surmises that "When Saban and Alabama split, it won't be pretty." Hait points out, correctly in my view, that Nick Saban is a total snake. He has always gone to the highest bidder and shows loyalty only to himself and his "methods." I am confident Vanderbilt will kick Nick Saban and the Tides' asses in Nashville in week 2 and that the hype machine that surrounds Saban, won't translate to "w's" on the field this season.

Over/under Saban puts in 5 years at Bama? Do anyone think he will win a national championship before he leaves?

I give Saban 3-4 years in Tuscaloosa, and I do not think he wins a national championship. In fact, I don't think Bama rises above M.O.R. status in the league. The rest of the SEC is just too good.

I hate Saban as much as any self-respecting human being, but I've got to take the naysayers to task on this one. He's already recruiting ridiculous talent and running some of the toughest practices in the country. As much as it pains me to say it, I think we're going to see Alabama right back in the SEC title hunt--probably not this season, but within the 3-4 year time frame.

The problem with everyone saying the program is too far gone to be resurrected is that it doesn't take a genius to know that Alabama (gag me) sells itself. It took a rare brand of incompetence in the form of one Mike Shula to drive the program down over the past five years. Saban wasn't even hired until January and he still picked up a Top-20 recruiting class.

It's so hard to win a national championship out of the SEC under the current system that to predict a BCS title for Saban would be overly ambitious. But he will have them back at the top of the SEC pack sooner than later. Whether he stays five years is another question, but if any school has proven it's willing to shell out insane money to lure (or keep) a coach, it's Bama.

That being said, let me finish with this note: "Around the bowl and down the hole, roll Tide roll." Prepare to be upended by Chris Williams's Mack truck.

Don't be too hard on Mike Shula. He didn't run that program into the ground, it was messed up long before he got there with probation, a coach who got caught at a strip joint, and a phenomenal receiver who just happened to get a two year injury.

Saban will be fine at Alabama, and after his stint in the NFL I don't think you'll be seeing Saban jump ship any time soon. I'd take the over on 5 years at Bama.
