We'll start today with Brett Hait's "Inside Vanderbilt" in today's Nashville City Paper. Hait's look "inside" highlights the sterling reputation Bobby Johnson was earned as he enters his sixth year at the helm of the Commies. To that end, as Hait points out, CBJ has been named one of the 5 most underrated Coaches in college football in the Sporting News' College Football Preview. Request for SWAG: A note to our readers in the SEC country, if you could send me a copy of the SEC Edition of TSN's preview, it would be much appreciated.
Hait's note's also talk about a Commie reunion in Triple-A Buffalo, Vanderbilt's newest commitment, Shan's patriotism, and the dismissal of Quavian Lewis from the football team.
The left-side of Vanderbilt's infield had a big day for Team USA yesterday. Both Ryan Flaherty and Pedro Alvarez went yard in Team USA's 5-0 victory over Keene (NH). I have to assume this was a tune-up game and Keene hasn't succeeded from the union.
The DC Dores look to get back to their winning ways tonight aganist the Ohio State University.

We dismissed Quavian Lewis?!?!
This is not good news at all. Lewis was an absolute animal during the spring game and was a player I picked to develop well on our defensive line. I know that our reputation of academic respect and what not comes first, but first Jonathan Massey, now Quavian Lewis, and ALSO Marquez Hall.
With a team like Georgia who has a ton of talent that can be replaced easily, I find it simpler to swallow. But for us, it alarms me greatly every time this happens.
That's true, and I agree that you hate to lose talent. But I would be more alarmed, honestly, if he broke the rules, couldn't make the grade, etc...and wasn't dismissed.
If Vanderbilt doesn't hold itself to the high standards it has set for itself as a university, than it's nothing more than a school with a terrible football team.
Along this line did anyone notice that in the Athlon Sports preview for Vandy they imply that Vanderbilt has lowered its academic requirements? Do you guys think this is true? the Lewis thing would seem to imply it is not.

We are going to go over the Vanderbilt team previews later this summer. I did read that and honestly made a note in my magazine questioning that contention.
There is no reason, whatsoever, to think that Vanderbilt has lowered academic standards. I do think it is a sad state of affairs for college football if, because a team from a academically rigorous school starts to improve, the first assumption made is that the school as lowered academic standards.
I suppose that the "undisclosed violation of team rules" is probably academic related and if so I think that's a very classy thing for CBJ to call it when he dismisses his players, so that they can afford public embarrassment and can get on with other teams. And I agree that it would be worse to find out he broke the rules and nothing was done about it.
BUT this is STILL worse than it's being made out to be. Quavian Lewis was a stud, Jonathan Massey had a lot of promise, and now we're another player short in a secondary that wasn't that deep in the first place. And while we want to place a positive outlook on what Vanderbilt football currently is, we simply don't have a lot that we can afford to lose.
So now SOMEONE else is going to have to step up. And God I hope they do.
I'm pretty sure that comment was printed in the section quoting opposing coaches who were assessing Vanderbilt's program. It appears to me that the remark was one just one coach's opinion about how Vandy has been able to build its program over the past few years. To be honest, I'm not in a position to be able to say whether we have or haven't eased up a little on the academic requirements for admission. As long as the guys are qualified to attend the school though, who cares?
Another two cents: as previews go, Athlon's look at Vandy is pretty bad. Pick up a copy of Lindy's. Brett Hait (of Nashville City Paper renown) wrote the Lindy's preview, and it's fantastic as usual.
